THE GROWTH OF alternative powertrains and autonomous technology is rapidly reshaping the fundamentals of what a motor car is. But it’s also causing fundamental shifts in the companies that make them. Or, as Francisco Carranza, Nissan Energy Services’ chief, told me recently: “Being just a car company is not possible any more.” That might sound like a pithy line but it’s true. The newest version of the four-door coupé, which will be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show in November, is built on the same MRA rear-wheel-drive platform as the E-Class, but its engines, driver assistance systems and other interior options are taken from the S-Class. “It can be used for 2WD EVs, to hybridise an existing vehicle or to convert a 2WD vehicle to 4WD” A new in-wheel electric motor designed to make it easier and quicker for manufacturers to develop EVs is due to enter production in 2018. The weight-saving technology, called the Protean Drive, has been under development by Farnhambased Protean Electric for the past eight years. “There are a number of different applications for it,” explained Protean’s Gabriel Donaldson. “It can be used for two-wheel-drive EVs, to hybridise an existing vehicle or to convert a two-wheel-drive vehicle to four-wheel drive.” The Protean Drive is a completely self-contained ‘smart actuator’ that includes a permanent magnet and synchronous electric motor, as well as the electronics needed to make it work. Mini has revealed the 1499 GT, a throwback special edition paying tribute to the classic 1275 GT built between 1969 and 1980. A total of 1499 cars will be made, exclusively for the UK, and will cost £16,990. It will be available in black or white only, with gold or black decals depending on the body colour. Also offered is the John Cooper Works Sport Pack, which includes upgraded sports seats, steering wheel and door entry plates. THE PORSCHE MISSION E will retain the sleek, futuristic shape of the concept it is inspired by, as shown by a development car seen wearing near-production-ready bodywork for the first time. The car was photographed outside Porsche’s development centre in Weissach, Germany, sporting fake exhaust tailpipes fitted to conceal its identity. A future Tesla Model S rival, the Mission E sits on one of three new electric car platforms being developed within Porsche’s Volkswagen Group parent company. This J1 structure is described as being different in construction to the C-BEV platform due to underpin Audi’s forthcoming E-tron quattro SUV concept. What’s it like to ride in the back of a Phantom? Fairly sublime, as you’d expect. It’s the noise levels, really, that set the Phantom apart from everything else. You can tell there’s lots of soundproofing by how heavy the doors are. Which is no biggie, because they’ll close electrically. Even at motorway speeds, somebody shuffling the steering wheel is about the loudest thing you’ll hear. The seats are large and adjustable, and you won’t run out of leg room in either model. “The Stinger makes more power than £32k buys in any other rear-driven executive option” The Kia Stinger may be many remarkable things: a brand-building, visually jaw-dropping rear-driven grand tourer the like of which we’ve never seen from any Korean car maker. If you’ve read that before, it’s only because we’ve been told it before. A lot. And yet, at one level, you knew it was going to be a rule-breaker as well: a car priced to make a mockery of the value propositions of other rear-driven executive saloons mostly made in Germany. Following the Audi Q7 e-tron’s UK launch last summer, customer deliveries of the car have been curiously delayed. Usefully so, if you went ahead and ordered Audi’s plug-in hybrid SUV – base price £66,510 – because by way of apology, you’ll have been offered a discount that largely mitigates its £11,000 premium over the non-hybrid model. Guilty as charged Should the government be allowed to meddle in the automotive arena? They encouraged us to buy expensive diesels, then ensured greater depreciation by dissing them a few years later. Now they are about to make us go all-electric. There’s a problem here for the car makers: much of their legacy investment in traditional cars will be lost while R&D costs escalate during the changeover. The effect for us consumers is that electric cars will continue to be expensive while the makers recoup their costs but then, as the technology matures, prices will fall. After some overdue plumbing DIY, I was flushed with success, so I immediately went outside and laid into the X5. The new Mercedes-Benz CLS has been designed so that it could be fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain – although Kelz says the firm has no plans to introduce one. The petrol-engined versions of the 2018 CLS feature a 48V EQ Boost hybrid unit, with engines taken from the S-Class range. While that model is getting a plug-in hybrid option, Kelz told Autocar the CLS would only get such systems if it was required by a change in legislation or demand. “It would be technically possible to fit a plug-in hybrid but we have no plans to do so,” he said. “The demand for hybrids is not that high, so there’s no sense [in doing so]. Just days after the Porsche 911 GT2 RS beat the Huracán Performante’s Nürburgring lap time, we’re handing it a different prize: a T-shirt, if only one would fit, with ‘Autocar’ writ large on the front, the outline of a circuit recognisable to almost nobody on the sleeve and a huge target on the back. Audi S4 The Audi RS4 may grab the headlines, but the B7-generation S4 is wearing well thanks to its subtle looks. It’s also an easier everyday proposition because there’s a semblance of economy from its 344bhp 4.2-litre V8, although buyers are more interested in the 5.6sec 0-60mph dash and 155mph top speed. Expect to pay from £8000 for a saloon or estate with 100,000 miles and, ideally, a manual gearbox. Make sure the service file is bulging with receipts. Mercedes faces an interesting challenge developing the new CLS. The car has two distinct customer bases: those after a dynamic but luxurious four-door coupé and those (particularly in China) who want a luxury car with the style of a dynamic four-door coupé. To find out how Mercedes is attempting to keep both sets of customers happy, we were given a passenger ride in petrol and diesel versions of the first production trial cars. While largely finished in terms of manufacturing, there is still fine-tuning to be done on setup and programming. From the passenger seat (like the driver’s seat, more supportive than that in the E-Class, reflecting the car’s more dynamic nature), it’s clear how Mercedes is appealing to those buying a CLS for style. The Volkswagen Group is preparing to launch a new generation of electrified fast hatches, including a reborn Skoda Fabia vRS, at the start of the next decade. Insiders say that the new generation of hybrid-powered hot hatches are viewed by the VW Group’s technical and marketing teams as a crucial bridge in the move towards full electrification. BMWS WILL HAVE a steering wheel and driver controls for the foreseeable future – even when fully autonomous, according to Robert Irlinger, boss of the firm’s i division. Other car companies, most notably Volkswagen with its Sedric concept, view their vehicles of the future without any driver controls. The next-generation Renault Clio will be one of the first models in the supermini segment to be offered with a hybrid variant. Along with a hybrid powertrain, the next Clio – which is expected to go on sale in 2019 – will get Level 2 autonomy. That will enable the car to control steering and speed without input from the driver. This latest technology push from Renault follows the announcement of five new EVs in the next five years, but Renault insists that the Clio will not be one of them. The Volkswagen Group’s modular approach to car design – in which a huge number of different models across a handful of separate brands use the same platforms, engines, transmissions and technologies – is a masterstroke of industrial manufacturing, but it hardly encourages individuality. The impression you get is of groups of engineers walking through some great warehouse along enormous aisles, the VW badge or Seat logo emblazoned on their jackets, cherry-picking all the bits and pieces they’d like to use for their next product. It fills the S8’s engine bay Perhaps if it had never shared its 5.2-litre V10 engine with the Lamborghini Gallardo, the Audi S8 of 2006-2010 would never had made these pages. But for two extra cylinders, it hasn’t the measure of the Mercedes S63 AMG of the same era, as either a driver’s car or a luxury limo.
