Sales of D-segment cars such as the Insignia, Mondeo and Passat have plummeted in recent years, as buyers have downsized, moved to more popular SUV body styles or switched to premium models such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, many of which are as cheap as their mass-market rivals to lease due to their better residual values. Riders in self-driving cars could be offered free transport to a promoted shop as part of the in-vehicle marketing offers that car companies will exploit in coming decades, according to VW’s chief digital officer. “Imagine a company like Nike. They can advertise new trainers in the Sedric on the big screen and then a pop-up message: this ride is for free if we take you to the store. Do you accept?” said VW’s Johann Jungwirth at the FT Future of the Car Summit last week. “The government will give local authorities the ability to establish Clean Air Zones if necessary” On Friday 5 May, just two days after parliament was dissolved in preparation for the general election, a long-awaited government air quality consultation paper was made public. But with the current parliament now history, why release a policy that is, arguably, no longer valid because the government that drew it up no longer exists? The move had been ordered by the High Court in London after an activist law firm, Client Earth, had taken the government to court for the second time in six months. Sixty-three millimetres. That’s all there is between the lengths of the new Crossland X and the recently updated Mokka X. So what’s Vauxhall playing at, having two SUVs with barely a cigarette paper to separate them in size? Well, it argues that the Mokka is a traditional SUV, with big wheels (up to 19in), aggressive looks and the option of four-wheel drive, whereas the Crossland X comes with 16in or 17in wheels, majors on practicality and is front-wheel drive only. It speaks to our regard for the previous Swift that its replacement – an ostensibly respectable addition to the supermini ranks – at times seems a faintly less compelling prospect. For once, this has little to do with fundamental fitness for purpose and a good deal more to do with the areas where the old Swift righteously delivered more than could reasonably be expected for the price. Certainly in styling, handling and general refinement, the model seems to have made too little objective progress. Conversely, in other avenues – not least those related to practicality, performance and efficiency – it has crept tellingly ahead. Bigger, lighter, quicker: these are not virtues easily won. Four generations later, it has continued to grow from the sort of hot hatch Land Cruiser mash-up it once was to looking like everything else boxy and 4x4 today. That’s despite a lowered roofline and a nosey front end. There are just three engine options: 2.0 and 2.2 diesels and a 2.0 petrol. In fact, you can effectively get a RAV2 with the 2.0 diesel engine and two-wheel drive. At last, the BMW 4 Series GT Electric (News, 3 May) offers a clue as to what a sensible and wholly practical electric vehicle may be like. Don’t get me wrong: Tesla deserves accolades, but its high-end models are essentially unaffordable for the average person and in my opinion the company’s lesser models are far less aesthetically pleasing, however efficient they may be. At least the BMW retains the company’s general design philosophies and – if recent efforts are anything to go by – it will emerge much better looking at the point of release. The curious and sudden disappearance of the projector lights located in the wing mirrors was, as suspected, down to failure of the light units in the wing mirrors and my local dealer sorted that in a day under warranty. Soon after the lights went pop, I also got a warning every time the ignition was turned on telling me the engine oil needed changing. The dealer reckoned this was due to the system not being reset properly at the factory and the problem was easily during the same visit. ONE ASPECT OF the Ka+ that annoys me is the parcel shelf. It isn’t clipped in but instead rests on a couple of hooks, one on either side of the boot, and is attached to elastic cord, which springs it back to its original position. It works well enough most of the time, but if you shut the boot with a bit too much force, the flimsy shelf contorts, jams itself against the bootlid and prevents the latter from latching properly. From the outside, it looks closed and the first inkling you get that something is amiss is a warning on the infotainment screen declaring that the bootlid is still open. BMW HAS GIVEN its 2 Series Coupé and Cabriolet a mild refresh comprising exterior and interior design tweaks and a revised infotainment system. The key design changes to the car – which goes on sale in July – include a wider kidney grille, new LED headlights, revised tail-light lens graphics and redesigned alloy wheels. Inside, both Coupé and Cabriolet get a lightly altered dashboard with redesigned instruments and an updated 8.8in touchscreen and a revised iDrive infotainment operating system. “Lesser vehicles last about six months in the hands of the military but an RIV could last three years” A military jeep that can do 100mph on desert sand and out-accelerate many family cars has been built by a UK test facility that provides development and consultancy services to vehicle manufacturers. Called the RIV, which stands for Rapid Intervention Vehicle, it is the work of Horiba-MIRA. Without being based on any pre-existing vehicle, it took the Warwickshire-based company just 12 months to design and build it from scratch. The RIV was commissioned by NIMR, a military vehicle manufacturer based in the United Arab Emirates, to a challenging brief: to design and build a high-performance vehicle for use in the desert by UAE special forces, for rapid insertion into dangerous areas…

Hot hatchbacks may come and go, each one a potential reason to celebrate or regret, but the launch of a new dynasty of them, backed by one of the world’s largest car makers, is quite an occasion. And a brand-new performance sub-brand is exactly what Hyundai is about to give us. The super-saloon has clearly reached that point. The one that cars at the upper end of the hot hatchback class hit several years ago: a power and performance threshold that can be passed only by switching from one driven axle to two. In a formerly front-driven 1.5-tonne hot hatchback, it came at about 300bhp. For a rear-driven 1.9-tonne executive express, it’s come at twice that. “The Superb is a luxury load-hauler for not much money at all” There is a sound business case for buying a brand-new Superb Estate because it trounces the opposition from Ford and Vauxhall for kit, sheer space and, some would say, quality. The last time I wrote about my 320, it was due a cambelt change. Well, I assumed it was due because I couldn’t find any evidence that it had ever been done. Better safe than very sorry, then, and a specialist was recommended to me for the task. That was over two weeks ago. Hampshire-based reader Richard Frame had his Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI’s fix completed in January. The next day, Frame’s car began to judder in low gears, and the fan went into overdrive when the engine was turned off. He took the advice of the local VW garage and drove it at above 45mph in fourth gear for 15 minutes, in a bid to regenerate the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Nine days after the fix, the car wouldn’t start, so Frame returned it to the VW garage. Three days later, he was told the car needed a new exhaust gas regeneration (EGR) valve. Porsche has celebrated the creation of the one millionth 911, which rolled off the Zuffenhausen production line last week. The car, a 911 Carrera S, is specified to reflect the look of the first 911, which was made in 1963. It is finished in Irish Green with gold trim and badging, a steering wheel with wooden inserts, a manual gearbox and houndstooth seat trim. The car will be driven on a world tour that will include trips to the Scottish Highlands and Nürburgring, before being put into the Porsche museum. Porsche estimates that about 700,000 of the 911s made since 1963 are still in a roadworthy condition.…

FLEETS OF AUTONOMOUS cars will be helped to negotiate tricky traffic obstacles by ‘mobility managers’ in a remote control centre, says Nissan’s expert in artificial intelligence. The idea is to deploy human intelligence remotely to allow a car to keep moving in a situation when its self-driving sensors can’t work out what to do. “These are like air traffic controllers. They facilitate the flow, rather than control the vehicle remotely with a joystick,” said Maarten Sierhuis, director of the Nissan Research Center and a former NASA engineer. Nissan is using technology that was developed by NASA to help robot vehicles negotiate the surface of Mars. Once the mobility manager has solved a traffic problem for one self-driving car, the solution is then communicated to the cloud, where it can be…

To climb aboard the RIV you grab the rollcage, place a foot on the sidestep and swing up and into the deep bucket seat, before clipping yourself into the racing harness. The functional design extends to the cockpit which, despite a wealth of dials and buttons and a large centre screen, wouldn’t impress EuroNCAP due to its unyielding bare metal construction. Still, at least the steering wheel adjusts for rake. The dashboard is home to fuel, speed, revcounter and engine temperature gauges. “The GT is quick between points and it is satisfying, too, because it’s agile and responsive” This was meant to be a Mustang, you know. A Mustang with which Ford would return to Le Mans in 2016 to have a crack at winning a class, some 50 years after it won the whole thing outright with the GT40. At least, that was the plan. The engineers called it Project Silver, after the Lone Ranger’s horse. Trouble is that, like Silver was a big nag, the Mustang is big car, so it has a large frontal area, which is bad for aerodynamics and therefore bad for going fast. And the more Ford modified the Mustang for GT racing, the less of a Mustang it became, until they figured they’d never win…

Following the launch of last year’s award-winning saloon, BMW has moved on to the second 5 Series variant: the eminently likeable Touring. The estate version remains a European preoccupation (96% of the volume never leaves the continent), although that has hardly limited the model’s success. The new one is marginally larger in all dimensions than the model it replaces and improves on the saloon’s seats-up boot volume by around 40 litres. “This is the super-value sports car you always promised yourself” The best thing about all Jaguars is that they become affordable sooner rather than later. So we haven’t had to wait that long for the gorgeous F-Type to arrive on our local forecourts at almost realistic prices. You would be bonkers to overlook one of these. Back in 2013, what the world was really waiting for was a proper Jaguar, so a visually stunning rear-wheel-drive, big-engined, fabric-roofed sports car was just what the loyal customer wanted to order. It came with a choice of three responsive engines: a cooking 3.0 V6, a supercharged version and, at the top, a supercharged 4.2 V8. They all worked through an eight-speed auto and had super-fast stats. Even the slowest could get to 60mph…

Here was a proper sporty little number that may have been a frocked-up Golf, but it was all the better for it. “It strikes a nice compromise between sportster and cruiser” The Scirocco still strikes a nice compromise between a hard-charging sportster and a smooth motorway cruiser. It is marginally less practical than a cooking hatchback but that only adds to its credibility. Driving a Scirocco is fun. It really does feel decently fast, with bags of grip, hardly any body roll at all and precise responses. Well-known quotes from Hollywood blockbusters rarely get into car stories, but David Brown, the man behind Mini Remastered, produced one last week while explaining how he intends to cope with the unexpectedly high demand for his new family of modernised, customised classic Minis. “Well,” he said, nicking Roy Scheider’s famous line from Jaws, “we’re gonna need a bigger boat…” When the Remastered idea was revealed about six weeks ago, Brown and his small team talked about initial production of about 100 cars a year, a settle-down volume of about 250 and delivery of the first car this November. When the i8 came to me with barely more than delivery miles on the clock last spring, I wrote a long list of questions it would need to address before it headed back to BMW. Nearly a year and 15,000 miles later, the answers are in and could scarcely be clearer. “The R26.R’s commitment to the cause of hot-hatchery is unlikely to be equalled” It’s hard to imagine that back in 2009 Renault was having trouble shifting its hottest Renault Sport-fettled Mégane – the stripped-out, limited-run R26.R. Hard, because today you’ll pay at least £18,000 for one, a figure not short of its new price. That’s 18 big ones for an eight-year-old Renault whose commitment to the noble cause of hot-hatchery is unlikely to be equalled. For a start, it did without the regular car’s radio, rear seats, most of the airbags, much of the soundproofing, the rear wiper and the front foglights.
