TTHE FORTHCOMING successor to the original Cayman GT4 will stick with a naturally aspirated flat six engine despite the arrival of a turbocharged flat four in the Porsche 718 Cayman. The automotive industry will be dramatically affected by Brexit if there are any major changes to the way it currently works across Europe and the UK, according to two major European automotive bodies. Speaking ahead of last weekend’s EU-Brexit summit, the secretary general of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Erik Jonnaert, said currently the industries in the UK and Europe are closely integrated, but any changes to that will “most certainly have an adverse impact on automobile manufacturers with operations in the EU or the UK, as well as on the European economy in general”. It is the first time that the ACEA and the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) have spoken out on the matter, and echoes the views of Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders…

Volvo is primed to develop a smaller crossover to fit beneath the upcoming XC40 and rival cars such as the Audi Q2. Volvo’s head of R&D, Henrik Green, said: “It’s not a problem to have an XC20,” given that the car maker is equipped with both the platform hardware and the engines to suit a model pitched against the Q2. “The CMA platform can be made smaller,” said Green of the new Compact Modular Architecture small car platform that the company is co-developing with Geely for the XC40, the next-generation V40 and sister brand Lynk&Co. The first thing you should know about this new hydrogen-powered Honda is that it’s practically unobtainable. Honda is showing the Clarity Fuel Cell in Europe and allowing a few interested companies to run small fleets of them in interested markets, but it won’t be selling the Clarity here until the next-generation model arrives in 2022. Why show it all? To demonstrate the extent of Honda’s fuel cell progress and to prevent Toyota, whose fuel cell Mirai you can actually buy, from getting all the glory. When we acquired the car three months ago, I imagined refuelling would be problematic, given that this machine needed unique filling stations from which fuel flowed at an awe-inspiring 700 bar. Carry furniture with French polish A price of £2890 looks like very strong money for what is an old Peugeot estate. It is a classic, though. The 406 was the last of the old-school French estates, so maybe that’s reasonable. This one is a 2004 example with a 2.0 diesel and 89,000 miles covered. “The electric 4 Series GT has been conceived to offer performance on a par with the 317bhp 335d GT” A major realignment of BMW’s strategy is set to result in electric versions of up to three models in its current line-up — including a secret zero-emissions variant of the upcoming 4 Series GT — alongside new and updated versions of its dedicated electric i-brand models within the next three years. The battery-powered five-door liftback 4 Series GT is tentatively scheduled to go on sale in the UK in 2020. FERRARI’S REPLACEMENT for LaFerrari hypercar is three to five years from launch, according to chief technology officer Michael Leiters. He said Ferrari is currently updating its road car and research and development strategy for the medium term and LaFerrari’s replacement will be born from fresh innovations. “When we define our new roadmap of technology and innovation, we will then consider a replacement for LaFerrari,” said Leiters. “We want to do something different. It won’t be a road car with a Formula 1 engine because, to be realistic, it would need to idle at 2500-3000rpm and rev to 16,000rpm. Audi boss Rupert Stadler has added his voice to the defence of diesel as a road car fuel — but also urged rule makers to give more consideration to cars powered by natural gas. Talking in response to growing governmental, legislative and academic pressure to restrict and even ban diesel use, especially in built-up areas, Stadler said: “Diesel is a key technology yet the value of it as a fuel is no longer recognised. “I’d prefer to see its value through the eyes of the customer, who gets good torque, range and fuel consumption. These values should be respected, especially when we know that, for the next 10-15 years, 70-80% of the market will be diesel, petrol or mild hybrid. The Fisker Emotion will be launched in August with a 400-mile range from its electric powertrain, company founder Henrik Fisker has confirmed. The model, which features butterfly doors, was designed by Fisker, whose CV also includes the Aston Martin DB9 and BMW Z8 designs. The car will use innovative graphene battery technology that, the company says, will enable a lon ger range, faster charging times and extended battery life. As the first model from the brand, the Emotion will be an expensive low-volume car. A second, cheaper and higher-volume vehicle will follow and be built on a modular electric vehicle platform that, Fisker said, “will be scalable, so more models can be created from it in the future”.…

VOLVO’S ANSWER TO the Jaguar F-Pace, the new XC60, was revealed at the Geneva motor show in March and will go on sale this autumn. With the current XC60 now nine years old, the new SUV will make major strides in technical development. We look at some of the new XC60’s highlights. Body structure The XC60’s core body structure is steel and uses a very high percentage of immensely strong boron steel, which R&D chief Henrik Green says “is very competitive in terms of passive safety versus weight”. Aluminium is used for the bonnet and front wings. Steering assistance Active steering intervention is used to mitigate head-on collisions in a new system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation. That, they’ll say with a sigh, is the question. When they introduced the 675LT, even the 650S, they already knew this was coming. They knew what the 720S – P14, in McLaren’s development speak – would be able to do and they knew how much further ahead of both the 650 and 675 it was, in all areas. “It’s the most practical pure-electric car yet offered at a relatively low price” The Ampera-e is Opel’s, and in a couple of years’ time Vauxhall’s, new electric family car. In mainland Europe, beginning with electric-friendly Norway and followed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, it replaces the original Ampera of which so much was expected but which sold in small numbers. That 2011 Ampera was a range-extender with a separate petrol engine to power a generator, making the model a viable daily driver with no range anxiety. The ZS might just be the most crucial car that MG has produced since being reborn under the ownership of China’s SAIC Motor Corporation. Following the larger GS SUV, the ZS is the car most likely to crack the UK market, where MG’s annual sales have yet to surpass 4200 units. Things certainly get off to a good start here for MG because the ZS has its main rival, the Ford Ecosport, beaten for looks. The car’s cabin is significantly tidier too, with a simplistic design and 8.0in LCD touchscreen in higher-spec models. The touch and feel of the interior plastic trim is a marked step up on what you’ll come across in other MGs, especially in the high-grade versions that have leather seats and leather-clad door and dashboard trim.…

As a classic Mini owner for 25 years, I was intrigued to read about David Brown Automotive’s Mini Remastered. Although the Mini was always popular for customisation, it seems sad to do this to what are now 17 to 24-year-old cars. “In short, it’s the best Vauxhall I’ve ever driven and a quantum leap forward” In a way, it was prescient that editor-in-chief Steve Cropley should have picked up our new, seventh-generation Vauxhall Astra from the Ellesmere Port plant when our long-term test started back in February 2016. We rejoiced in the change of plan that had kept the factory open to produce this new car. Now, as our test comes to an end, we find it embroiled in all the uncertainty of the PSA Group’s takeover. At the time, we knew nothing of such things and were anxious only to see if this new Vauxhall could emerge from longterm use with us with its reputation at least intact, if not, as we hoped, positively enhanced. Our XF is equipped with InControl Touch Pro (ICTP), the Big Mac of Jaguar Land Rover’s infotainment systems. To upgrade to it from the XF’s as-standard InControl Touch costs £1200. For that, you get a larger, 10.2in, letterbox-shaped touchscreen that acts as the hub for operating the sat-nav, uprated Meridian hi-fi and myriad connectivity options. Even after 15,000 miles, I’m still discovering new things about ICTP. For example, if you’re following the sat-nav and get caught in a snarl-up, the car will text a revised time of arrival to a person at your destination, so they know not to put the kettle on just yet. Mind you, I still miss a rotary controller of the kind offered by most of Jag’s rivals. You can ‘prod, pinch and swipe’ the XF’s…

There were various little jobs on the old 3 Series that have been simple enough to sort out: misaligned steering wheel, some obstructive door locks and a couple of other bits and bobs. Rather more of an issue is the fact that the engine won’t fire up without help from a rancid can of Cold Start. Then there is the fact that, trailing through the history, I could find no indication that the cambelt had ever been changed, and that’s a problem on a 40-year-old car. “The standard car is a better-balanced proposition than the Esseesse version” There are faster, better-riding and cheaper hot hatches but none as turn-on-a-sixpence cheeky as the Abarth 500. If it were simply a hot Fiat 500, it might have got buried under all those Pops and Lounges. Instead, the shrewd application of the Abarth name (in its day, the Strada Abarth of 1982 was the fastest hot hatch around), complete with Scorpion logo, has given the model an identity all its own. An advanced new dynamic cylinder deactivation technology, which can cut CO2 emissions in petrol engines by up to 15%, will make production next year. Developed by parts supplier Delphi and automotive tech firm Tula, the Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) cylinder deactivation technology is the industry’s first fully dynamic system. The biggest savings come with larger petrol engines such as V8s but it is claimed to trim CO2 emissions by 8% in smaller turbocharged four-cylinder engines, making them as fuel-efficient as diesels. The system works by deciding whether to fire or skip each cylinder before its ignition. If a cylinder is skipped, the intake and exhaust valves are held closed by Delphi’s cylinder deactivation hardware. The system works by controlling the car’s spark, so only petrol cars are compatible. It makes…

Uber will launch flying taxis in Texas and Dubai by 2020 and it will charge $1.32 (£1) per mile — slightly higher than the cost of an Uber cab. The small electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is quieter, cheaper and less polluting than its nearest equivalent, a helicopter, said Uber. Using autonomous tech, it would also be safer by “significantly reducing operator error”. Uber described its plans as enabling “rapid, reliable transport between suburbs and cities, and, ultimately, within cities”.…

LAND ROVER WILL launch its Range Rover Velar SVR next year as a supercharged V8 SUV to rival the BMW X6 M. Using the same 5.0-litre engine as the Range Rover Sport SVR, the performance-focused Velar is expected to have 542bhp and 502lb ft. That should enable it to achieve a 0-62mph time of just over four seconds. Applying SVR weight-saving measures to the aluminium-based Velar is expected to bring the vehicle’s kerb weight down to about 1800kg, making it a significant 465kg lighter than the hottest X6. The Velar SVR will also feature a unique chassis configuration that has been honed at the Nürburgring, as confirmed by a recent sighting of the car at the German circuit. ‘Confident’ is how Volvo wants its new XC60 to feel on the road, and it’s easy to reckon this goal has been achieved when you’re doing 80mph through a sweeper and your driver is demonstrating the car’s responsiveness by zigzagging through the curve. The driver is Stefan Karlsson, Volvo’s head of chassis development. “There’s a lot more mechanical grip from the front end,” he says. This is the result of a new double wishbone front suspension system that allows the roll centres of each axle to be identical front to rear. That front-end grip certainly seems evident on the track, as Karlsson applies relatively modest steering angles even through tighter turns. Proactive Chassis Control II is far from the world’s most catchy name for a system that — like the best of them — is at once quite complicated yet brilliantly simple. It allows McLaren’s Super Series cars (the base models are the Sports Series, and the really fast ones, not currently in production, the Ultimate Series) to run without anti-roll bars yet resist body lean, and give it a hitherto unknown level of ride comfort. On each corner, there are two damper chambers — one for compression, one for rebound. The compression chamber of the front right damper is linked to the front left damper’s rebound chamber, and vice versa. Ditto at the rear. The dampers are connected front to rear, too. “The suspension handles large compressions and long-wave undulations well” The new Skoda Yeti isn’t actually a Skoda Yeti any more. That’s right: one of the last beacons of creativity in car names has been replaced with that of a far-flung tribe in Alaska, to give us the Skoda Karoq. Skoda had a hit on its hands with the Yeti. It was an early arrival in the crossover world, with enough quirkiness to mask its obvious compromises and shortcomings. It was likeable, a bit different, and sold well right to the end of its life. The side-hinged double rear doors on the original Mini estate – the wooden-framed 1960 Austin Countryman, I mean – were there for very sensible reasons. The Countryman was a more practical Mini, yet it was still compact and cheap; the fact that the rear doors were side-hinged meant there were no complicated, heavy and expensive spring arrangements to keep a rising tailgate open. A top-hinged tailgate would have had to be larger and heavier than the Mini’s roof would probably have allowed without strengthening. Besides which, the Mini was low, so a top-hinged door would have required the limbo to get at the boot. No wonder side-opening doors were the answer. Most owners are middle-aged professionals who use them as a second car. Downsides? They’re a bit tall, which takes the edge off the handling, and the stiffer suspension with the Esseesse kit ruins the ride. Other than that, they’re brilliant. Reliable, too. Wishbone and shock absorber bushes and front suspension top mounts are fragile, though. Some can go as early as 10,000 miles. Rear wheel bearings get noisy. BMW 6 SERIES GT | OCTOBER The odd 5 Series GT, a sort of jacked-up hatch-cum-saloon, will move up in BMW’s range, joining the coupé and convertible in the 6 Series line-up and superseding the Gran Coupé.
