PURE-ELECTRIC estates have been thin on the ground so far, but Volkswagen has teased its forthcoming entry to the class: a wagon version of the ID.7, which is set to arrive in 2024. Dubbed the VW ID.7 Tourer, it’s the production version of the ID. Space Vizzion concept. It’ll sit in parallel with the new hybrid-powered Passat Estate in VW’s line-up. Despite the camouflage, it’s clear that the ID.7 Tourer shares the saloon’s design traits. That car is capable of 435 miles on the WLTP test cycle, but given the Tourer’s more practical form, we don’t expect it to be quite able to match it. THE MX-5 in these images is part of Mazda UK’s own heritage fleet. It’s an early car from 1990, with a full Mazda service history and just 39,000 miles on the clock, and its specification is totally original. This MX-5, as with the rest of Mazda’s UK heritage fleet, is running on Coryton sustainable fuels. The ‘80’ in its Super 80 name refers to the percentage of agricultural waste used to make it. This includes straw plus by-products and waste crops not fit for human or animal consumption. Coryton says the 98-octane-rated fuel reduces greenhouse gases by 65 per cent compared with petrol. WITH plentiful cheap parts, a vast world of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades available, and so many on the market to choose from – although good examples are getting harder to find – now is the best time to hunt down an early MX-5. But before the onslaught, the company has managed to sneak in a facelift for its flagship SUV, the Q8. It’s a relatively mild update, mind you. The most noticeable changes come at the front, where there are slimmer headlights and a new grille, plus more aggressive air intakes in a reprofiled bumper. The headlights are arguably the biggest change, with an HD Matrix laser configuration – a first for the Q8. SAME CLASS Hyundai Kona Electric BOTH the E-2008 and Atto 3 come with their own unique spread of strengths, but the Kona has both of them beaten. This second generation has seen Hyundai eliminate the weaknesses of its predecessor while maintaining its best bits. Space is one key improvement: where a Kona was once cramped in the back, it’s now more roomy than the already vast Atto 3. PEUGEOT is treating its people carrier, the e-Rifter, to a mid-life refresh that boosts tech and increases its range. The e-Rifter gets a redesigned front end, with a new grille, a different bumper and fresh headlights that feature Peugeot’s ‘three-claw’ motif. Inside, there’s the option of a 10-inch infotainment system with wireless Android and Apple connectivity. The updated model sticks with a 50kWh battery and 134bhp motor, but the e-Rifter can now travel up to 199 miles between charges, a potential gain of more than 25 miles when compared with the outgoing version. THE expanded London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) generated £23.6m in revenue in the month following its launch on 29 August, according to analysis of data released by Transport for London (TfL). In the first month of the expanded ULEZ operation, just over 57,000 drivers paid the £12.50 daily charge for vehicles that are not compliant. That broadly means diesel cars built before 2016 and pre-2006 petrols. The data also shows the percentage of ULEZ-compliant vehicles in the outer London boroughs where the expansion was implemented has increased from 85 per cent to 95 per cent, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan pointing to this as evidence that the scheme’s primary aim of improving air quality is being achieved.…

But expanding dimensions make it harder for chassis engineers to keep an ever-increasing mass in check, while a wider body makes a car more difficult to enjoy on the B-roads that thread their way through the UK’s countryside.
