SAME CLASS Lexus NX 450h+ GREAT though our two contenders are, they can’t quite match the brilliant Lexus NX 450h+. Not only is it superb to drive, with refinement and competent handling in abundance, but its hybrid system is the best in the class. In EV mode, it has more power than either the XC60 or Velar, and the transition between petrol and electric drive is exceptionally smooth. Most of all, though, it’s frugal. Given that just about every tyre on sale these days is a radial design, it is no longer a problem drivers need to be aware of to stay legal. They award the 1 Series last place in the engine and gearbox categories, and also give the hatchback a lowly 67th position for ride and handling. A deeper dive into the results reveals that it’s the three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine’s note and the smoothness (or otherwise) of the gearbox that disappoint owners, along with the steering and brake responsiveness, which all rank in 70th or worse. UK car production surged by almost 32 per cent in July compared with last year’s figure, marking the sixth consecutive month of increases. A total of 76,451 new cars rolled off British production lines in July, as brands recover from the global chip shortage that followed the pandemic. Despite this, the figure remains 29.4 per cent lower than in July 2019. Just 13,187 cars made in July were destined for British buyers, while 63,264 were built for export to overseas markets such as the EU, US, China, Japan and Australia. Forecasts claim UK car production will top 860,000 units this year, and could surpass one million by 2028.…

Despite the legal battles and political wranglings, there are now daily charges in place for vehicles that don’t meet the new emissions rules. But rather than buy a newer ULEZ-compliant car, some drivers are looking to exploit a loophole and swap into an even older model which might pollute more. Most ULEZ rules state that vehicles which are more than 40 years old are officially considered ‘historic’. This makes them free to tax and MoT exempt, but also means they don’t have to pay ULEZ fees. PLANS to introduce a Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) in the centre of London have been dropped, according to Mayor Sadiq Khan, as protests continue against last week’s expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). The confirmation from City Hall that ZEZ planning has been shelved also came last week. The mayor’s office says it will be focusing on hitting London’s 2030 ‘net zero’ emissions targets in other ways, but also says it will support individual boroughs if they wish to implement their own local ZEZ schemes. The mayor had previously pledged to deliver a central-London ZEZ by 2025, saying it was likely that any vehicles with tailpipe emissions would have to pay a charge. ONE thing we have to do when comparing PHEV costs is take the fuel bills with a pinch of salt. Costs vary wildly based on how often you keep the battery charged, but also where and how you charge it. However, the Volvo was more frugal with an empty battery (on which our costs are based), and has a longer electric range than the Velar. In terms of finance, the XC60 again takes the lead. FORMULA 2 has unveiled its new car, which is set to arrive on the grid in 2024. This is the fourth generation of F2 car (including the GP2 series) and it broadly follows the same recipe as the outgoing model, although governing body the FIA claims it has been “designed to encourage wheel-to-wheel racing, which will lead to thrilling on-track action”. The chassis is still built by Dallara, with a carbon and kevlar structure to the bodywork. The original Ranger Raptor had a 2.0-litre twin-turbodiesel, and Ford has now introduced an oil-burner to the current version. Rather than use the new 3.0-litre V6 that’s available in the latest Ranger, it’s another 2.0 litre, and as with the standard truck, it comes with 207bhp when equipped with Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox.
