Dear Lawrence, I’ve no interest in buying an SUV, and want a premium-feeling estate with an automatic gearbox. What’s on offer for £16,000?

THE DESIRABLE CHOICE
Jaguar XF Sportbrake
FOR: Great looks, strong ride and handling AGAINST: Patchy quality, priciest here
MANY consider the first XF to be Jaguar’s turning point. The slick design is a world away from the backward-looking Jags of old, while the interior has plenty of classy touches. The XF is also fun to drive, with engaging handling and a well-judged ride if you avoid the biggest wheels. Only the 197bhp 2.2-litre diesel is within budget, but it’s frugal, smooth and offers decent pace. We saw a 51,000-mile 2013 2.2 Premium Luxury for £15,990.
INTERIOR of the XF looks stylish…
