Dear Lawrence, I live up a bumpy gravel track, but I don’t want a big SUV. What comfortable, raised-up estates should I be looking at for my £15k budget?

Passat Alltrack
FOR: Upmarket cabin, rides and drives well AGAINST: Bland styling, emissions recall
VOLKSWAGEN’S Passat Alltrack isn’t an obvious choice in this class, but it’s a fine used buy and more capable than you’d think. Based on the previous Passat Estate, it has rugged body cladding, a 30mm ride height boost and permanent four-wheel drive.
It’s got enough off-road ability for most and is good on tarmac, too, yet it’s only available with the 2.0 TDI diesel affected by the Dieselgate scandal. We found a 2013 model with 45,000 miles for £13,950.
