Many of us would love to be able to take pictures like those big and epic ride images that we see on the glossy pages of cycling magazines and books. Sadly, all too often reality fails to meet expectation, and we end up with blurry and over exposed pictures of tiny and cumbersome riders. The term cycling photographer is something that from the outside may well seem straightforward – just like a sports photographer. However, as with so many things in life, once you delve deeper you’ll realise that it’s a whole lot more complex. The Milky Way over a Bavarian mountain, a colourful explosion of the Southern Lights in Tasmania, and a dramatic lunar eclipse, all featured in the Royal Observatory’s Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2019 shortlist. It’s September 2019, and I’m in San Francisco when I get a fortune cookie with my dinner. I read it out to my group – “you will travel to many exotic places.” We all burst out laughing! To me, that is the adventure of travel, exploring new lands, people, cultures and enjoying the many new doors that open both photographically and in life. Travel photography is a very broad subject that includes just about everything away from your home base. Once you open your door and head to your transport – the adventure has begun. Travelling allows me to shoot everything from the smallest insect to the grandest landscape. The only rule of composition is that there are no rules. You might have heard this said before, but there is a grain of truth there; composition is a slippery concept and what works for one photographer in one context might not work for others. It’s also true that whilst there are no definitive rules of good composition I think we can manage to lay down some useful guidelines. I have been teaching photography for at least a decade now and one of the hardest things to explain to people is how to frame and compose their photographs. To me, certain arrangements of image elements just ‘look right’, but that feeling comes from long practice, having been a full-time professional photographer for 35 years. Gigabyte’s new powerhouse AERO 15 OLED laptop might just be the best option yet for photographers on the go. The camera will always be the most important tool a photographer owns, but what is your second most important? Given most photographers now spend more time editing and tweaking photos than actually making them, I think it should be the digital darkroom – the photographer’s laptop. Typically a good digital darkroom consists of a desktop computer attached to a decent colour-calibrated monitor, but these monitors are usually expensive and not very portable. And while most laptops can happily run imaging software like Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, most laptop screens lack the colour-accuracy needed for image editing; but that is about to change. SMARTPHONE STUNNER According to Richard Lukacz, Lady Elliot Island is a sanctuary for birds who coming en masse to breed. “Those particular birds like to lay eggs in the bushes, on rocks close to the sea. On our morning walks around the Island, they would fly from the bushes to distract us from getting closer. At the time I had only a mobile phone with me. I took a few photos. The first impression when you look at the picture on PC it looks like a messy bunch of birds flying around. It is very misleading. Photographic moments tend to jump out at me when I least expect them. This wall for example, caught my eye whilst out and about and straight away I knew I had to capture it. Yet, at the time, I had no idea what was drawing me to it. Although I could see the geometric lines created wonderful shapes allowing for a variety of compositions, there was an underlying message I was yet to explore. I often don’t initially know what my images mean. Most of the time I start out with a plan but it’s not until much later that I realise the image was telling me what I needed to know about myself at the time. APPLE ANNOUNCES THREE NEW IPHONES APPLE has announced three new smartphones - the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. All three smartphones feature standard 12MP cameras plus ultra-wide 13mm camera modules, with the higher-end iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max keeping the telephoto lens of last year’s iPhone XS models, although these now offer a wider aperture. Matching features found in Huawei and Samsung’s flagship smartphones, Apple have also included a new night mode as well, designed to deliver better low-light performance. A software update known as Deep Fusion, scheduled to be released soon, will let the phone combine the best of multiple shots into one image with low noise and high sharpness. Firstly, it's worth mentioning that things aren't quite as simple as just a big 32.5MP sensor that both cameras share. The EOS 90D (which admittedly we haven't reviewed) is Canon's new flagship APS-C DSLR and occupies the slot previously taken by the 7D Mark II. The 90D gets better battery life, and more video recording features at the cost of the bigger, bulkier body, while the EOS M6 Mark II gains better AF performance. For photographers who like the reassurance of a DSLR, the 90D is a smart choice, but for photographers looking for a high image quality to camera size ratio, the M6 Mark II should be, on paper at least, the go-to option. I will start by clarifying that I am not a street photographer that has followed the works of the renowned artists of the genre, nor have I completed any photography qualification, and photography has not always been a passion for me. Growing up in suburban Melbourne in the 1980’s, like most teenage males I was obsessed with sport, in particular Australian Rules football (Western Bulldogs), cricket and later road cycling.
