Here’s a question for you: How much time do you spend thinking about the light and shadow in your photography? If you’re anything like me, probably not as much as you should. Over the years I have tried sticking to a particular shooting mode. From Manual mode, to setting both shutter and aperture myself, to adding a more recent technological option – auto ISO – I’ve tried them all. Which is best? The reality is each has their positives and negatives. For me, semi-automatic settings provide simplicity, speed and flexibility, something that can’t always be said for Manual mode. Many photographic tutors will say that Manual is the only way to go when learning photography, but I disagree. Professional freelance photographer Nathan Duff has long held a love for cars: Classic cars in particular. Notably, his first paid job as a freelance photographer was for Australian Classic Car magazine, a gig which led to regular photo shoots, and a lot more cars. Speaking to AP from his base in south-east Queensland, the 40-year-old told us he enjoyed working for the aforementioned motoring publication for some years before it shut its doors. If big is beautiful, then Panasonic’s new full-frame cameras, the 47-megapixel Lumix S1R and its sibling, the 24-megapixel Lumix S1, could be the most eye-catching cameras of the year. The two cameras were officially launched in Australia at a recent media event in Hobart, where Panasonic made it very clear they want to excel in the full-frame mirrorless market, just as they’ve excelled in the Four Thirds market over the past decade. How important is light in photography? More than any other part of photography, light is what gives our images drama, and light is what makes our audience feel something when they view our images. Light is the fundamental element for every great photograph, and should be the first thing you assess before you press the shutter. Just as a painter uses paint to brush onto a canvas, photographers paint their images with the use of light. Technically speaking, this is achieved by capturing light particles on light-sensitive mediums such as film or on a digital sensor. A few years ago now, the president of my club announced that there was an exhibition of the Warragul National Competition and he suggested that we should go and have a look. I had only just joined the club, I had no idea what the terms APS, VAPS, VIGEX, LAPS, AAPS or APSCON meant, and upon seeing my clubs competition images I thought, “I can’t compete with those”. Eventually, the day of the exhibition came and at the time, I considered myself to be a reasonably accomplished photographer and yet, I had never entered any competitions; not even at my club. This image was captured not so long ago at the Carriageworks Farmers Market in Eveleigh, Sydney. We ventured out one Saturday morning in search of good coffee and some fresh produce and this popular weekend market seemed the right place to visit. I’m a keen street photographer and I only shoot with my iPhone. As a result I’m always carrying my camera wherever I go. It means if an opportunity presents itself I can quickly reach for my camera and capture the scene I’m interested in. I particularly love shooting in wet weather conditions: they make for dramatic skies, shiny surfaces and great reflections, especially in puddles. COLOUR HIGHLY COMMENDED BRUCE THOMAS M&M’s EDITOR’S COMMENTS Bruce Thomas says he created this wild technicolour image by laying out a large packet of M&M’s on his work bench, putting a house brick either side and then placing a sheet of glass on top of the bricks. He then used a water atomiser and sprayed the glass with water droplets. The image is made up of four shots, focus stacked together using Photoshop. The abstract nature of this image is really striking, and I really like that it’s only when you look closely at the droplets that you realise what it is you’re looking at. As strange as it sounds, my journey in photography began when I realised that I had nothing to fill three of the walls inside my newly-bought house. Determined to fill them, In 2014 I bought my first digital DSLR camera, picked a country with magnificent views of mountains and was soon exploring the Himalayas.
