Travel photography is, and probably always will be, my favourite genre of photography. I cut my teeth doing it many years ago, and it’s something that continues to influence where and when I travel and photograph today. I think I like it because it’s a bit nebulous – you can shoot portraiture, landscapes, or architecture, and all of them could be classified as travel photography. And, unlike other genres that have defined rules about what does and doesn’t qualify, travel photography has almost none – except perhaps that images be captured in a place that is not your own. On a recent Greenland expedition we stopped at the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit for a few hours. This is one of the most remote villages in the world. Lovely and colourful, but how do you make the most of an opportunity like this in a different way than just taking the same old shots? I encouraged my customers to enjoy their time walking through the village and look for images “outside the square”. On landing in the zodiac, it took only a minute before everyone headed off in different directions - excited as kids in a candy store. The magical possibilities of image editing are something we are all familiar with and see on a daily basis thanks to social media. If you’ve ever wondered how that one photographer gets super lucky with insane sunsets in every location, or second guessed if an image is made up of not one but two photos it could all come down to the editing process. Photography for me is like an ointment – it soothes the hurt bits and revives me from the weariness of life, especially those days spent beside calm water, or watching the surf roll in, or just looking at trees. I discovered the cathartic properties of all things creative during a difficult time in my life. I found that even bad poetry and handmade gifts produced a sense of satisfaction and peace. Travel photography is arguably the most competitive of photographic genres thanks to the fact that the subject matter, namely people, places & wildlife, is the preferred subject matter of nearly everyone with a camera, especially when they are on holiday. There is no question that digital technology, both cameras and post-capture software, has increased the chances of technically decent pictures being captured, (and rescued when necessary). However, one of the thoughts I repeat often is that travelling to take photographs is very different from taking pictures while travelling. One of the fundamentals of photography is the technique of using leading lines to tell a visual narrative, creating depth and bold symmetry. Leading lines are all around us in daily life, and yet we never really think about them. Using them well can create a strong visual impact that draws the viewer forward on a journey through the image. Typically, leading lines start in the foreground and extend to the background of the photograph, and often they create the feeling of the scene being never-ending, such as when the leading line is a roadway or a railway line. Our eyes are naturally drawn to lines in photos as they tend to make us feel included in the image. Photographer Sally Mann described this as a way to “look in…

Loy Krathong is a spectacular festival celebrated throughout Thailand in honour of Buddha. The main happenings take place in Northern Thailand, in Chiang Mai, with festivities involving placing floating lanterns in the river, usually the day after the famous sky lantern release called Yi Peng. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which was difficult to determine when the dates change every year. Fortunately I was able to time my travels in Thailand around the festivities in order to experience and photograph the magic. SUMMER TRACE O’ROURKE ‘The offering’ EDITOR’S COMMENT: Don’t feed the birds they say – but how would you get great shots like this if you always did that!? We love the moment captured here, and really like how you’ve included just the essentials too; an arm, a chip and a perfectly frozen bird in flight. Trace O’Rourke says she was enjoying dinner on the beach whilst waiting for sunset when she was scouted by seagulls. “While this one bird just hovered over us, I quickly grabbed my camera, laid back to view from underneath as we attempted to hand feed it, capturing the moment just before the offering was taken.” The result is a fun shot, and one that is nicely exposed too. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? The first proper camera I purchased was a Canon 1000D in 2008. And, like many others, photography started as just another hobby. Having never really pursued any creative arts before, I never gave much thought to the artistic possibilities this could provide beyond just taking simple snapshots. I was living in the UK and had rarely travelled far beyond Europe, but in 2009, decided to move back to my hometown to Perth, taking a long solo trip via Asia on the way. After moving back to Australia yet never really feeling settled, in 2012 I pretty much decided all I wanted to do for a living was photography. If you were to look inside the camera bag of a professional landscape photographer, alongside a wide angle lens, you’d be sure to find a set of neutral density (ND) filters. ND filters work by evenly reducing the amount of light that enters the lens. This enables photographers to have creative control over their shutter speed in order to create dramatic, silky smooth clouds and water. Unfortunately, high quality filters that don’t affect image quality are quite costly and depending on the system can be bulky and cumbersome. BALANCE OF COLOUR Carol Wilson wrote: “This image of my granddaughter was taken late one afternoon on Stradbroke Island. While I like the photo, I am never sure in PP whether, amongst other things, I get the white balance right or whether I should just rely on Auto to do the job for me.” Auto usually does quiet a good job. This image looks to have had a little too much post processing and the white balance is, as you mention, not quite right. It all depends on whether you want a realistic image. That sky is a strong lemon yellow which is definitely surreal and the contrast is heavy. I like the figure of the child and the bird and reflection in the middle of the frame. A small…
