SONY has announced its most advanced full-frame camera for professional photographers yet. The new A9 is designed to pose a formidable challenge to Canon and Nikon, with a full-frame stacked CMOS sensor (24.2 megapixels), incredible continuous shooting capabilities, and 693 autofocus points. The A9 shoots 4K video, features 5-axis in-body stabilization, dual SD card slots, and it’s even got an ethernet port. What Sony hopes will entice sports photographers and other pros with fast-moving subjects on the A9 is it’s blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 20 frames-per-second for up to 241 consecutive RAWs (or 362 JPEGs). By comparison, the Canon 1DX MkII offers just 14fps. The camera’s maximum shutter speed is 1/32,000sec, and Sony says the camera is capable of “calculating AF/AE at up to 60 times per second…

Photographing waterfalls can be very challenging for even the most experienced of landscape photographers. The attraction to their natural beauty is very easy to understand, but successfully capturing amazing images can be a bit harder than you may think. It is important to have the correct equipment and to plan the correct seasons and time of day to visit any individual waterfall to maximise your chances of coming away with something really special. This image ‘Perpetual Motion meets Immovable’ (right) was taken with one arm linked through the bar work on a five metre boat in a two-and-a-half-metre swell at dawn, in the Tasman sea just east of Tasman Island. This is the most wonderful coast line. I Googled it before my husband and I went to Hobart for a conference, and mentioned how wonderful it looked to his cousin David. This is one of his favourite parts of the Tassie coast and he kindly offered to take us out in his boat for photos. What an amazing day it was, I’ll never forget it. I have spent the past 10 years photographing the United Arab Emirates. I think as an expatriate you never really belong here, but because of the unique way the country has developed you can find yourself an integral part of its popular culture. It’s that disconnect which interests me and my images attempt to look beneath the brand into a culture that is evolving without design. I love strong, sometimes quite abstract compositions, little details that people miss and I also love working in black and white. SIGNS HIGHLY COMMENDED KARINE RADCLIFFE Asleep on the Job EDITOR’S COMMENT Karine Radcliffe tells us this image was taken along the road in South Africa, travelling from Upington to the Kgalagadi National Park. “We have travelled this road a few times, but have never seen more than half a dozen vehicles at any time. Overkill!” she says. It’s a perfect example of how with street  photography in particular, signs can be effectively used to draw attention to points of interest, like the sleeping road worker - the unwitting star of this shot. ZARNI MYO WIN (OVERALL WINNER) Three kids were jumping from a statue of a lion near Mya Thein Tan pagoda, Myanmar, while happily swimming in the Irrawady river. Swimming was only possible because of a flood, as normally water passes very far from the river bank. Kids don’t worry about floods like adults do! There are few things in life more rewarding and enjoyable than travelling to a far flung destination, but there is also nothing worse than travelling to a far-flung destination and returning with ordinary photographs! I should know. Back in 2011 I spent three months living in Kuwait and travelling through the Middle East. I had recently bought an easy to carry point-and-shoot camera and although I saw some magnificent sights, I also came home full of stories but completely underwhelmed by my images. Never again!
