Rule of thirds
Q I keep hearing about the ‘rule of thirds’ needing to be followed to create a good composition. But, I don’t always find this in all the photos I really like. I am confused. How important is this rule for creating a compelling photo?

A In his book The Great South Land, Australian photographer Ken Duncan says: “There are no rules. If an image works, it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
While the rule of thirds can be useful, it is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule.
Aside from viewing photography exhibitions, looking at art is a great way to help understand composition, and it will also help you understand the rule.
