How long have you been creating in fabric? Oh gosh! Um … most of my life, I guess. My mum taught me to sew when I was around eight years old, and I haven’t stopped. Has your style changed much since your earliest stitching attempts? Very much so. I used to dabble in dressmaking and would try and create ‘trendy’ items (though, looking back, they weren’t very trendy!). Bag-making wasn’t even on my radar at that point (though I did own many more store-bought bags than I would ever use). Now, it’s bags, bags, bags! Lay out all the letters on the ‘Home Sweet Home’ block before fusing any of them to ensure that you get the spacing even. Fold the top edge of the yellow rectangle cut for the block background over by 1in and press to crease it. That will help you to align the letters on the fabric: position them so that their top edges just touch the crease. Alternatively, consider angling the letters a little so that they’re deliberately not perfectly straight – that introduces a whimsical element and means that you don’t have to agonise over their alignment.…

If you’re not confident about placing the individual shapes for each block on the background correctly, assemble the multi-layered elements – such as one of the people and all their clothing – on a sheet of baking paper and fuse them together. You can then place the entire element as a single fused piece on the block background. This means that if you happen to make any mistakes as you assemble the elements, you can re-make them without having to cut and sew another block background.…

TIP I use a modified needleturn method. I trace the design as given onto freezer paper in its entirety. Starting with the leaves of each block, I cut them out of the traced design and fuse each one on the right side of the selected green fabric, leaving room for a seam allowance around each one. I cut them out by eye a scant ¼in outside the edge of the paper. I put the freezer paper/fabric shapes back in position under the rest of the design and pin them in place with appliqué pins. After all the leaves are pinned in position under the design, I centre it on the background fabric. I remove the pins, then lift off the larger freezer paper design and pin the leaves in position…

Ever wondered what to do with Gran’s heirloom handstitched linens? Or wanted to save a stained or damaged embroidered tablecloth? Textile artist Lisa Mattock shares how she took timeworn materials, mixed them with sympathetic fabrics and added some slow stitching of her own to create textural collaged artworks for the home. 1 First, she cut three rectangles, 12 x 16in, from calico. 2 On each rectangle, she layered an assortment of small pieces of patterned cottons, vintage textiles such as linen, pieces of the old tablecloth, gauze, insertion fragments etc to cover the whole area. Where do you live and work? Home for my family and me is a lovely Queensland coastal village situated 30 minutes south of Brisbane and 40-ish minutes north of the Gold Coast and NSW border. Geographically, we’re a bit spoilt, with the best of everything that nature and tourism offers. Early morning walks here are a joy, as little wallabies are a regular sight. I don’t think I shall ever tire of the pleasure of watching the sun rise over our beautiful little bay, and the views over to Stradbroke Island. I’m very lucky to live in a good-sized, modern, nautical-themed abode that allows me to have a separate dedicated room for my sewing/crafting ventures. Think about the fabrics that you choose for your appliqué and take advantage of printed designs and motifs. For example, choose a tartan print for the Scotsman’s kilt. Where do you live and work? I was very lucky to have the opportunity to build a new home with my family a few years ago. The top floor is a small loft with white walls and windows on every side. I am so grateful to have lots of sunlight in the summer (winter days in Canada are uncomfortably short) and room to manoeuvre between my cutting table, sewing machine, ironing board, and desk. Allison is an avid hand stitcher who loves to experiment with found objects and fabrics. Second-hand linen and wool clothing make up the bulk of her fabric stash. Allison lived in Australia from 2011-2016 and was an active member of the CWA (Country Women’s Association), but now she has moved to her US hometown in the prairie to be near her parents. How did you start your sewing career? I started my career in the quilting industry as a young mother of five. Money was tight in my household, and my love for fabric was something I could not afford to indulge. I was determined to make my much-loved hobby a self-sustaining one. What proportion of your stitching and craft work is dedicated to children’s designs? Almost directly proportional to the number of grandmas who buy my work. Grandmas rock! What’s the best part of creating something for kids? Firstly, when they reach out a timid hand and lovingly stroke the stitching. Secondly, a couple of years later when you see the quilt loved to death. The stitching’s come off, it’s all wrinkly from 20 cycles going through the wash, but the kid’s sitting in front of the tele all snugged up and content.
