I made her out of calico, rather than wool felt, added a few extra highlights on the basket and embroidered the recipient’s name on the back. I think she looks gorgeous. Where do you live and work? I live in beautiful sunny Queensland, north of Brisbane. Not too far from the coast, so I can enjoy all my favourite things by the sea. How did you feel when you first started sewing? My first taste of sewing was when I was given a sewing kit for my birthday, when I was about seven years old. I started hemming a dolly sheet by hand and found it so boring that I don’t think I ever got it finished. It was shortly after that that I learned how to use Mum’s sewing machine and made all sorts of dolly creations. Has your response to your craft changed much since then? Sometime in my teens, I discovered that hand sewing wasn’t so boring and even made an English paper pieced cushion. Where do you live and work? I live in a regional area, approximately 100km south of Sydney. There are a lot of farms around us, and we have horses and cows in the paddocks just over our back fence. I’m not a hustle-and-bustle, big-city person, so this is my perfect place. I have a dedicated sewing room at the back of the house. It’s a large enough room with lots of shelves for storing fabrics and yarn. I have a cutting/pressing table and a long sewing table under the windows, facing the backyard, where I can see the paddocks and mountains in the background. Where do you live and work? When we moved to Cairns, we bought what was supposed to be a temporary small house with a large back yard. Well, 22 years later, our temporary home is now permanent and a very large green shed sits in the backyard – it is my studio. My husband had the shed constructed with a mezzanine floor, and then he did the most amazing fit-out himself so that I have a wonderful air-conditioned space comfortable enough to live in. The amazing thing is that I have managed to fill the very large space with machines, work tables and lots and lots of fabric, threads and quilting paraphernalia. There’s a new baby in your family isn’t there? Yes, there is. I am a grandma for the first time, and I am excited about this new phase of my life. Was the new baby the inspiration for this bear design? I started making small quilts because I wanted to learn to do the quilting myself. So I started with small pram quilts, and what better subjects than teddy bears? After handling the small pram quilts, I progressed to a small baby quilt. I love patchwork and applique, but I find quilting is the most challenging part of the whole process. These small quilts were made well before I knew I was going to be a grandma, and they have been great gifts for friends with new babies. What’s next…

How did you feel when you first started sewing? I was about four years old. And since then, I don’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t sewn. I began patchwork about 18 years ago. It was a lightbulb moment, and I knew this was for me. Has your response to your craft changed much since then? Yes. Patchwork and quilting was my hobby until 14 years or so ago – when I first started longarm quilting for customers. Then I started teaching in a shop. Now, it’s a hobby and work. How did you feel when you first started sewing? I was excited to begin my creative journey as an adult. My mother was always sewing or knitting, so I grew up around a creative influence.
