RECORDING WITHOUT EFFECTS Capturing a clean, dry vocal without any effects during the recording process gives you the opportunity to approach a mixing session with a greater advantage. Without any effects being “printed” on the signal, you are at liberty to try a variety of mono/stereo effects at a later stage, to see which combination will work best with the vocal and the placement of the vocal in the stereo spectrum (left-right mix). At the recording stage of the vocal, it is very difficult to try and work out the final balance and placement of this recorded signal, so capturing a clean signal gives you a better chance to make it sound great when it comes to mixing. THE SECRET TAKE (RECORD EVERYTHING) Once a headphone mix is prepared so…
CURRENTLY PLAYING WITH: Myself... So to speak. Haha! USUALLY FOUND PLAYING: At late hours, jamming out or listening to records in my “gypsy cave.” The later it gets, the more blues and deep old country I tend to delve into. YEARS ON THE FRETBOARD: Ten. My brother actually gravitated towards the guitar first. My instrument was piano and then my voice. Then, after about five lessons, my bro gave it up. I remember seeing it sitting in the corner and thinking, “I would freaking love to be able to play that.” I taught myself some chords from an old chord shape deck, and haven’t really put it down since. Writing on it and playing live came two or three months later. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PLAYING STYLE? I’m a…
A VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE MATHISKE Bruce Mathiske - described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “The Authentic Guitar Virtuoso” - grew up on a wheat farm in Mallee, Victoria and has paved a very successful career predominately as a solo virtuoso guitarist and composer. His three decades of performing, recording eighteen solo albums and touring has led to endless sold-out concerts and worldwide acclaim. His compositions of suites for guitar and orchestra are the culmination of a lifetime of absorbing music and sounds. In mid 2013, Mathiske entered his “retreat” and began composing a series of four Suites for guitar and orchestra. Twelve months later, he finished recording with The Metropolitan Orchestra at Trackdown in Fox Studios, Sydney Australia. “Bruce Mathiske’s album reflects not only his virtuosity and vision…
Every guitarist plays with a specific sound in mind. Whether it’s a biting hair metal solo, a folky acoustic twang or a face–melting djent riff, the ultimate goal for any axe–slinger worth their strings is to nail that perfect tone. “Perfect” is a subjective term, naturally, but it’d be hard for anyone to deny the crawly plucks on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, or the genre–defining hammer–ons on Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker”. And though it’s the shredding itself that brings us to our knees, history’s most iconic guitarists would be nothing without their gear. Reverb know the deal – their mission is to hook passionate guitar players up with top shelf tools tried, tested, loved and lauded by the very best of the even better. The platform is built around a…
WHERE: QUDOS BANK ARENA, SYDNEY WHEN: 23/04/2016 REVIEW: DAVID JAMES YOUNG PHOTOS: ROSS HALFIN Long Beach rock’n’rollers Rival Sons possess a leather-jacket cool, settling into a groove laid down well before any of them were born. Their fingers have sifted through countless classic rock records, and it shows. Jay Buchanan screams like Roger Daltrey circa “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and prowls the stage like Jim Morrison circa… well, Jim Morrison. He’s backed by guitars that are as indebted to Jimmy Page as they are Keith Richards. Hell, even the keyboardist has nicked his beard from ZZ Top. Still, this real life, five-headed Every-Man are quite the entertaining prospect. Their shortcomings in terms of generating original material are easy to overlook when one considers just how many bands out there are…
