My late father, Ron, owned a newsagent for two decades, and I was the proverbial kid in a candy store. But my sugar rush was magazines. From sumptuous Vogue to automotive bible Autocar, from Country Life’s millionaire’s row to The Dandy gigglefest: something for everyone. Including, come 1994, me. Attitude changed everything. Wrestling with my sexuality, I’d sneak a copy from the shelf and peep into the world I wanted to inhabit. I’d never have imagined, one day, I’d buy Attitude outright, and become the title’s first gay owner. But it rocked my world then, and it still does, every day.
