These 13 new oil paintings by Maureen Gallace were small—the largest just 10 by 13 inches— but surprisingly powerful. Mostly seascapes and landscapes, they were quaint and beautiful yet often tumultuous, with occasional hints of darkness—much like the sea itself.
Here, beaches, sites of joyful, leisurely play, were wild, frothy expanses. The waters are rendered in brushstrokes that are at once impassioned and thoughtful, as though the artist’s hand, poised above the canvas, controlled the entire ocean. A jagged line of spray and eddy bisects the canvas in Beach/Wave (2013), dividing land from sea. In Storm (2015), tempestuous skies stir overhead; clouds roll in from a dark horizon.
