As I usually paint flowers and gardens, the beginning of spring is an exciting time, heralding possibilities and places to explore. During the winter, I’ve been working from photographs but, recently, gathering a jewel-like bunch of flowers from my garden prompted me to attempt a still life. The aim was to work quickly to keep a seasonal freshness. I wanted to make the drawing accurate enough to give a sense of the flowers’ structures, while keeping a looseness and rhythm in the brush marks.
