Issue 83 June – August 2023 We are celebrating an incredible milestone: the twentieth year of the Australian Interior Design Awards, which is a partnership event of Artichoke and the Design Institute of Australia. The awards applaud innovation and excellence in our industry, and this year, we received a record-setting number of entries – nearly 670 – from across our country and around the world. The program has yielded an amazingly rich archive that covers two decades of interior design in Australia. Reflecting on the winners from years past – as well as the thousands of shortlisted projects – gives us insight into our architecture and interior design benchmarks and what they have represented at various times. Rafi by Luchetti Krelle Sydney bar and restaurant Rafi features a playful design by Luchetti Krelle that complements its bold Mediterranean menu. Outside, aperol-toned umbrellas invite diners to indulge in spontaneous aperitivo hours; inside, spirited dining arrangements prioritize innovation and comfort with a maximalist mash-up of materials and pigment pairings. Because Rafi inherited an existing shell-part of a tenancy upgrade that remained vacant over lockdown – Luchetti Krelle included structural changes like aluminium box-frame windows to admit light and visually extend the footprint towards the courtyard. A semi-alfresco glasshouse now wraps around the tree-lined entry terrace, while a row of additional tables flanks the main dining room along the terrace at the rear. Zucci Salon by Breathe Working to a brief inspired by wellness spaces like spas, saunas and yoga studios, Breathe designed Zucci Salon in South Melbourne as a space where customers can relax. The pointof-sale zone is centred around a lush tree, which has been integrated into the custom cutting bench, A long pill-shaped piece in blackened steel, cement and timber composite panels, it forms the salon's grounding centrepiece and also embodies the material palette. To align with the sustainability-minded approach of both client and designer, Breathe chose natural materials that are simple, durable and non-toxic, like floating timber shelves to display the salon's stock of Aveda products. The integrated design approach of architecture-heritage-interior stitched together unifies the contemporary office use and the original building. This project is an exemplar environmental design that is based on natural light, passive ventilation, material selection and electricity generation all facilitated by the new contemporary intervention. Award Retail Design Designer Trower Falvo Architects with Alessio Fini Design statement — The Postal Hall is the grand space at the heart of Perth's State Buildings complex. Informed by “kite” componentry, the design comprises a centralized, demountable bookshop. Its construction and expression suggest both permanence and temporality: a bookshop conceived as a central hub, grounded in the public realm. The ambition of the project was to challenge the conventional thinking of a commercial bookshop. As part of the ongoing and ever-changing public realm in the post-pandemic era, it is no longer enough for an interior design solution to be solely a static visual artefact or simply a “flexible” solution. He conceived the practice on the back of Oxlade Apartment, which presented a valuable opportunity to revitalize apartment living in Brisbane, and to set a precedent for this often-undervalued era of building – a late-1960s apartment block. Last year, the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) advocacy work in support of the interior design profession, uncovered a fundamental problem with the skill level listed in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). Since then, the DIA has raised its concern with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), which oversees ANZSCO together with Statistics New Zealand and the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. ANZSCO is an integrated framework for storing, organizing and reporting occupation-related information in both statistical and client-oriented applications, such as matching job seekers to job vacancies and providing career information. For many people, domestic architecture fades into the background – but for artist Esther Stewart, the field is a treasure trove of inspiration and inquiry. With a practice that comprises diverse materials, scales and typologies, Esther has developed a distinctive visual language that abstracts elements of domestic architecture. By integrating art, architecture and landscape, the design has delivered an art museum experience distinctive to Sydney. The gallery pavilions, roof terraces, and rammed earth walls straddle the interior and exterior to create a unique visitor experience.
