Issue 82 March - May 2023 This special issue, guest edited with designer Pascale Gomes-McNabb, is focused on Australia’s talented emerging designers, and it’s been a long time coming. Years ago, I noticed more emerging studios popping up individuals who had taken a punt and broken away from medium and large firms to set up solo or small practices. They were producing exciting work, untethered by traditions, styles or legacies. These young individuals were not just designers and architects - they were researchers, artists, educators, environmentalists and social enablers. They were using their design credentials to solve longstanding problems - create furniture from waste, design spaces for social inclusion and use new technologies to share knowledge. It’s your ultimate design dinner party which four guests are you inviting and why? Ettore Sottsass, Sabine Marcelis, Rei Kawakubo and Yayoi Kusama. Half for the design icon status they all hold for me, and half for the amazing outfits I have no doubt would be present. What was your seminal design moment? Since my pre-teen years, I’ve loved curating lights and furniture for my living space, changing them regularly to create new environments. Intended as a sister venue to Africola’s primary site in the CBD, Africola Canteen draws upon its suburban setting and an eclectic palette of off-white, brown, burgundy and red, which was pre-nominated by the clients in their initial meeting with designer Claire Markwick-Smith. Continuing an established collaboration with powerhouse brand agency Super Assembly, Markwick-Smith was presented with the task of working to a tight timeframe (five weeks from concept to handover to the builders). To meet this difficult brief, the design cleverly utilizes finishes that are typically seen in domestic settings and makes the most of the site’s limited floorspace. “It was an excellent challenge to really elevate these finishes and push the limits of how conventional materials are typically treated,” says Markwick-Smith. Most inspiring space you’ve been to? It’s hard to narrow this down to just one, but the State Library of Queensland by Donovan Hill and Peddle Thorp is an incredible building. It’s a great reference for how architecture can offer a strong relationship to its context and climate, flexibility of use, and a generous contribution to the public realm. Anupama Kundoo, Geoffrey Bawa, Richard Leplastrier, Alvar Aalto - they each have a locally specific and lasting design sensibility. Favourite design quote? Collaborating with a scientist to create a regenerative ceramic design using waste materials. Casts collection from Bankston Casts is a pared-back, geometric collection of architectural door hardware made by Bankston (a Southern Design Group brand) in collaboration with Melbourne-based studio Edition Office. Comprising two door levers, four door pulls, a hook and a snib, Casts was named in honour of its method of production. Over time, the hardware will develop a patina that makes its unique use patterns stylishly visible. Over the years, the Design Institute of Australia’s (DIA) Practice Notes have been a helpful resource allowing designers to gain access to vital professional design information. As part of the recent refresh of all DIA resources planned around the launch of the new website and branding, the members’ Practice Notes series has had its first major overhaul in over a decade. The improved and refreshed series, with over seventy items, provides more relevant guidance for contemporary workplaces and is available for all designers who are members of the DIA. The Practice Notes cover topics such as conditions of engagement, confidentiality agreements, preparing for staff reviews, understanding intellectual property and how to set fees for design services. Gildas Surry Hills by Atoma Architecture and Design Gildas is the sister bar to chef Lennox Hastie’s restaurant Firedoor. The brief was for a feminine architecture that would draw inspiration from Gilda, the 1946 film noir starring Rita Hayworth. The design consists of strong, curved forms and rounded details that work to create intimate, elegant spaces. These forms are purposefully orientated towards the existing arch windows, activating the street frontage in the heritage conservation area. The existing ceiling was cut away to highlight the curved arch windows and to draw in light and expand the height. Guests are greeted with a curved bar with a quartzite stone top that further creates a domestic feel and elegance. The use of timber is a nod to Firedoor, while a brass folded ribbon…

What would be the dream project? Deconstructing an iconic Sydney building and finding new uses for all the intricate custom-built materials and elements. Most inspiring space you’ve been to? Neus Museum in Berlin by David Chipperfield. It’s the blending of old and new that does it for us - it’s incredibly well considered. How did you gravitate towards your field of design? Second Edition started as a research project, so it was all about learning about how we could build more resource-efficient buildings and objects. “I’ve always been interested in how things go together, and how things get taken apart,” says Amy Seo, one-half of Sydney-based studio Second Edition. What was your seminal design moment? As lost first year students listening to Professor Michael Tawa lecture on the history and theory of architecture. Kōri Ice Cream by Architects Eat Architects Eat has referenced kawaii culture and the hyperpop music movement in the design of Kori Ice Cream on Gienferrie Road in Melbourne, an ice cream parlour scooping up a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese flavours. With its dramatic use of colour and strong graphic elements, the space is reminiscent of an eye-catching street poster down a laneway - the architects envisioned that patrons would “take a step off the pavement and become a part of the art.” The hero of the project is the galvanized steel island, meticulously planned to house all of the equipment, ice cream, cutlery, electronics and storage. Within this context, it seemed fitting and timely to dedicate an issue of Artichoke to the rising stars in design and architecture across Australia. There were many to choose from, and it was obvious from the outset that we could never give a comprehensive overview of the talent in this country. However, this issue aims to present a survey of the innovative work being accomplished. More than 30 emerging studios and individuals appear in these pages - some you may know, some you may never have heard of. Entering a salon can be a confronting and awkward experience. Typically, clients enter into the heart of the working space, where hairdressers cut, dry, sculpt and colour clients’ hair to transform or refresh a look. In this situation, it’s hard to know where to wait, who to look for or what to do. You might even begin to question your choices: Can I really pull off a bob? The Disco Salon refutes this experience. What’s your seminal design moment? The earliest is walking up the ramp at Daryl Jackson’s Harold Holt Pool, unsure what world we were about to enter. What would be the dream project? A monastery or an outhouse. Favourite artwork? Jimmy: Charles Simonds’ Dwellings (1981) Millie: Rachel Whiteread’s House (1993) It seems banal to point out that buildings are rather big objects and, consequently, made up of many parts. Yet, this is an unavoidably important reality of architectural work. Buildings are assembled from bricks and boards, floors, walls, rooms and storeys; they accommodate different individuals, groups, activities and objects. The fashion world moves quickly and rewards adaptivity and flexibility. However, a sense of stability is also needed to garner brand recognition and confidence. This rings particularly true for a multi-brand retail outlet such as Above the Clouds, which seeks to attract big names to its range. Based in Sydney’s Surry Hills since its conception, the outfit has moved between small spaces that struggled to keep up with its owners’ ambitions. The owners wanted to create a destination where people could discover the variety of brands in stock. They also wanted a space that could grow and evolve as they did - one that would inspire events and foster collaborations with local designers.
