Jury comment There’s an almost monastic restraint to the design of Rockpool, Neil Perry’s flagship restaurant, which relocated from Sydney’s Rocks to the heritage-listed Burns Philp Building in the CBD in late 2013. The beautifully crafted shell, with its balcony-like mezzanine, ornate columns and ironwork, impressive arched, timber-framed windows that overlook Bridge Street and soaring ceiling height has a wealth of natural and historic advantages. But rather than trying to embellish on these, the design instead chooses elegance and restraint, a kind of visual silence that is something of a rarity in an era plentiful with imagery and ideas. Jury comment With its uplit vaulted ceiling, terracotta floor tiles, white glazed wall tiles and abundant displays of fruit and vegetables piled high on tables modelled on old wooden trestle tables and fruit crates, The Standard Market Company consciously nods to the traditional. But there’s a modern sensibility at work, too, at this third outpost of the Queensland food market that incorporates a butcher, a baker, a deli and a green grocer. Glazed cool rooms are stacked full of cheese and hanging meats, while butchers and pastry chefs work behind glass, all tapping into current obsessions with the theatre of fresh food production and the desire for immediacy between food production and sale. Jury comment Part of a series of well-integrated, beautifully realized “culinary destinations” occupying the ground floor and basement of Canberra’s heritage-listed New Acton Pavilion, the cafe at A. Baker is a refreshingly brutal space with the building’s dramatic recent history etched into the walls. The 1920s building was ravaged by fire in 2011 and the design incorporates the charred walls as part of a palette that also includes concrete, bluestone, galvanized steel and leather – an elegantly elemental mix. The cafe shares the ground floor space with the A. Baker restaurant, the two areas separated – and connected – by a central open kitchen. design statement The design philosophy for this store revolves around the handmade and custom tailoring aspects of the Joe Black fashion brand and product. Suits are constructed using various layers, including the finer details of hardware and stitching, and this inspired the interior’s look and feel. Existing decorative elements from the original Lonsdale Street building facade, including the window framework, have been retained, and given new contemporary expressions. This is realized in classic, understated materials that evoke Joe Black’s branding – grey Nuvolato marble, dark timbers, tan leathers, aged brass accents, mirrored glass and plush upholstery. Textural concrete greys, dark timbers and brass tones bring warmth and softness to the space and contrast with the natural timber grid ceiling installation. design statement An artful play of timber surfaces and geometric patterns, the store design for Gorman at Emporium Melbourne expresses the brand’s distinctive and whimsical style and serves as an extension of its aesthetic. Using balanced combinations of recycled messmate timber, black metal and stone, the project offers a versatile space to display product and provide a unique customer experience. A signature tapered timber ceiling and textured tiled shopfront play with the eye, inviting customers to explore the world within. Products are displayed on varying configurations of timber rails with black metal frames and brass detailing. Along one entire side of the store, timber shelves float seamlessly on the wall to form an alcove for footwear and also incorporate clothes racks. When Sydneysiders saw the scaffolding go up around the Cleveland Street headquarters of Australia Post in Redfern, many thought it would be the last time they’d see the salmon-pink pomo pile. It was assumed that, like many other sites in town, it would be torn down and replaced by boutique park-side apartments. However, rather than disappearing from the city’s collective forever, the building and its interiors have undergone reconstructive surgery.Melbourne-based Carr Design Group has transformed what was one of Sydney’s ugliest ducklings into the belle of the ball, complete with a welcoming smile in the form of a sparkling new forecourt. Design membership organizations such as the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) are at a crossroads. They exist in an increasingly competitive and dynamic environment in which professional peak bodies must not only stay relevant and responsive to the current context but also anticipate future change. This situation is described in Associations Matter: 2013 State of the Sector Report, a study by Survey Matters, Australia that provides compelling insight into issues facing professional associations across a range of sectors in Australia and New Zealand. Members of the DIA were invited to contribute to this work and the implications of its findings are significant. Jury comment Everything about Clever Little Tailor, an Adelaide laneway bar in a repurposed early-twentieth-century loading dock, is carefully considered and admirably consistent. From the handpainted gold lettering on the front door through to the meticulously crafted leather booths, painstakingly exposed bluestone and brickwork and the marble, parquetry and polished aluminium detailing, there is a seamless branding that gives the bar a strong sense of authenticity, as if it has been in the business of shaking cocktails for decades rather than months. It’s a warm, inviting design, interestingly textured with the almost exclusive use of non-synthetic materials and the clever, flattering lighting that works equally well day and night. Jury comment This cheerful ray-of-sunshine coffee van perfectly encapsulates what the Best Temporary Design category is all about – the innovative ways in which hospitality can be delivered. The quirky retro good looks and eye-catching colour give Coffee Peddlr’s retrofitted Citroen H van an almost instantly iconic impact and signal a sense of humour and fun. The highly efficient and sympathetic reinvention of the van also ensures that it’s able to deliver a product that meets the exacting standards of today’s coffee drinkers. One of the most impressive features of the van is the use of materials such as plywood and vinyl flooring that are not only necessarily light and hard-wearing but that also mirror the H van’s design aesthetic and are coupled with the history of the Citroen “workhorse.”…

Jury comment It doesn’t really have a name other than its location and at night, after closing, it’s hidden behind an unmarked metal roller shutter, but the bar at 20 Meyers Place stands tall as a design template for Melbourne’s – and arguably Australia’s – small bar and laneway culture. The bar opened in 1994, a result of a change in Victoria’s licensing laws that allowed bars to sell alcohol without having to also serve food and the desire of a group of fledgling architects to create the kind of place that they wanted to socialize in, but which didn’t exist in Melbourne at the time. Emporium Melbourne is the long-awaited infill piece in Melbourne’s Golden Mile, the stretch of retail properties extending from La Trobe Street all the way down the hill to Flinders Street. The opening of the new centre makes it possible, for the first time, to walk from La Trobe Street’s Melbourne Central shopping centre down to Bourke Street Mall without your feet touching the ground. Since planning commenced in 2008, CFS Retail Property Trust Group, the owner of Emporium Melbourne, has been on a quest to introduce something unique to the city, at least in retail-planning terms. design statement Autonomy at Emporium Melbourne responds to the fragility of the physical retail industry due to the impact of online shopping and provides a future model for “permanent” retail design. The store’s design investigates the potential to prefabricate a modular “kit of parts,” facilitating a demountable retail presence that can be relocated and reappropriated to suit a future tenancy. The design is a direct attempt to provide earnest and practical solutions for the clients’ needs, while adhering to a very modest budget. The entire project was designed with almost no waste material. If the tenancy “kit” was to be demounted and relocated, all that would remain would be the base building services, and the floor screed, which could be reused by the next tenant.
