THIS MONTH, Art & Antiques celebrates Asian art, on the occasion of Asia Week New York, a citywide event involving galleries, auction houses, and museums that is marking its 10th anniversary. One of the salient facts of today’s art market, in the U.S., Europe, and Asia alike, is the growing appreciation of the arts of China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayan regions, with some truly amazing artworks and artifacts coming up for sale. Tastes are broadening, and areas of pre-modern Asian art that were formerly less well known and understood in the West are being avidly collected, while Asian contemporary art forms that ground themselves in the past while remaining very much of this moment are also enjoying great success. ASIA WEEK New York, the 10-day-long festival of all things Asian art that takes place throughout New York City each year in March, is having its 10th anniversary edition from March 13–23. A virtually continuous round of gallery open houses, auctions, museum exhibitions, lectures, and symposia will be available to all, while a private, by-invitation-only reception in celebration of Asia Week will be hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its Asian galleries. THE INAUGURAL edition of the Philadelphia Fine Art Fair (PFAF) kicks off on April 4 with an opening-night preview and continues through April 7. The tightly curated boutique show, which will be held in the historic 23rd Street City Troop Armory, features a selection of international dealers specializing in modern and contemporary art. One highlight of the show comes from Los Angeles-based gallery Arcadia Contemporary: Empyrean Sea, an egg tempera on panel by Julio Reyes. A Los Angeles native, Reyes creates figurative works that balance realism with a sense of melancholic mystery. Philadelphia gallery JSF Contemporary will be featuring The Striped Man, a 2006 oil on board by Thomas G. Brady. THIS YEAR, the Armory Show celebrates its 25th anniversary. The fair, which is an art world institution, will kick off with a VIP Preview Day on Wednesday, March 6 before opening to the public on March 7-10. The Armory Show brings 194 international galleries from 33 countries to Piers 92 & 94 on Manhattan’s Hudson Riverfront; 59 of the fair’s exhibitors are joining the roster for the first time. THE CELEBRATION of Fine Art, Arizona’s Longest-Running Art Show, is open daily through Sunday, March 24. Highlighting the work of 100 acclaimed and emerging artists hailing from Arizona and elsewhere in the country, the juried show colonizes a series of tents in north Scottsdale, with 40,000 square feet of working artists’ studios and exhibition spaces. An outdoor sculpture garden will feature some 100 pieces of life-sized and monumental sculpture. One highlight of this year’s show is Utah-based artist Leslie Duke’s deconstructed, thoughtful still life Mementos. The life of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–92), the last great master of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition, was almost as lurid and macabre as the images the artist created. Struggles with depression and poverty, as well as multiple ill-fated love affairs, haunted his career like one of the terrible creatures from his famous series, “New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts “(1889–92). The tragic figure cut by Yoshitoshi, that of the tormented romantic, has its own particular resonance with a shadow world of art and artists in Japan. THE LEADED-glass table lamp seen here has always been one of Tiffany Studios’ highest earners. Most recently, it set the world auction record for Tiffany Studios at Christie’s New York’s Design Sale this past December—raking in nearly $3.5 million. Some 30 years prior, at a Christie’s sale in 1989, it broke the same auction record, fetching $550,000. The “Pond Lily” design, which was inspired by the pond flora at The Briars, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s country house on Long Island, was in production from 1902 to 1906; the 1906 Tiffany’s catalogue listed it for $400, making it one of the studios’ most expensive lamps. The word Avalokiteshvara is Sanskrit and means “the lord who looks down,” in the sense of compassionately gazing down on the earth from a higher sphere. Avalokiteshvara has been known by many names in many languages in Buddhist nations, and has been depicted in diverse ways in Buddhist art. The sculpture shown here is Chinese, made around the 17th century in the style of the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty. “GUO PEI: Couture Beyond” opens at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, Calif., on March 9. The exhibition, which is organized by the Bowers in partnership with SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film and SCAD: The University for Creative Careers, showcases more than 40 pieces by Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei and runs through July 14. China’s foremost haute couturière, Guo has worked in fashion for over 20 years. GEORGE W. BUSH isn’t the first former American president to put brush to canvas—Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter both painted in retirement—but he is the first to achieve emotional intensity and historical relevance with his work. Bush, who took up painting six years ago at age 66 after reading Winston Churchill’s Painting as a Pastime, created portraits of men and women who served in the U.S. military since 9/11 and whom he came to know after leaving office. ON MARCH 17, Treadway Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, a specialist in 20th-century art and design, will hold its auction of African American Fine Art. The specialist in charge of the sale is Thom Pegg, who has been collaborating with Treadway on African American art for over 20 years. The upcoming sale will include works by blue-chip artists including Sam Gilliam, Norman Lewis, Bob Thompson, Romare Bearden, Betye Saar, Sargent Johnson, Elizabeth Catlett, and Charles White, as well as by more affordable emerging artists. The sale will have a section devoted to paintings, drawings, sculpture, and prints from the Melvin Holmes Collection of African American Art. This rare portable oratory was made in South China in the early 17th century for a European client, who was likely Spanish or Portuguese. Its ornate decoration is a unique juxtaposition of East and West. In fact, the intricate floral and avian patterning of its two doors are in a highly dissonant—yet beautiful—contrast to the oratory’s internal oil painting. The doors feature a carved low-relief decoration that is lacquered in black and highlighted in gold. It is in a style consistent with the, albeit few, examples of Luso-Asian lacquers that are extant. These examples are occasionally oratories like this but more often are carved trays, fall-front writing cabinets, or writing boxes. On March 23, Cottone Auctions of Geneseo, N.Y., will hold a sale of art and design objects. Among the design offerings will be a grouping of Tiffany lamps and various works by furniture designer Wendell Castle. THE EUROPEAN Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) opens this year on March 16 at the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre) in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Running through March 24, the fair brings together 276 leading international dealers with fine and decorative art offerings that span 7,000 years of history. As a reflection of the market, TEFAF Modern will undergo a major recalibration, with a renewed emphasis, and 13 new exhibitors. ON MARCH 21–23, Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N.C., will be presenting its Premier & Emporium Catalog Auction, with more than 1,900 lots of material including American and European paintings, furniture, jewelry, silver, clocks, Asian decorative arts, and a selection of cut glass. The top lot is likely to be a rare and important map of Virginia, the Bishop James Madison Map, published in 1808 (est. $80,000–120,000). Assembled from six separately printed sections, it is in black and white with a hand-colored landscape view of the city of Richmond; the map also includes portions of the states of Ohio and Kentucky and the Michigan Territory. “ZILIA SÁNCHEZ: Soy Isla (I am an Island),” which runs at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., through May 19, is the first museum retrospective of the prolific yet largely unknown Cuban artist. The show spans Sánchez’s nearly 70-year career, and traces her journey from Havana to Europe and New York to Puerto Rico—where she lives and works now (the show takes its title from the fact that she is an islander). Over 60 paintings, shaped canvases, sculptural pieces, and works on paper, as well as illustrations, design sketches, and other ephemera, come together in the show. Pieces like Troyanas (Trojan Women) (1967) and Amazonas (Amazons) (1978) showcase both Sánchez’s frequent references to mythological warriors and her unique technique of stretching canvases and painting them with acrylic in minimal geometric…

THE WORK OF an American Indian modernist artist, previously unknown to the art world, is about to be revealed, thanks to Philip J. Deloria, professor of Native American history at Harvard. His book, which comes out next month, is titled Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Indian Abstract (University of Washington Press, $34.95). It not only recounts the story of the artist’s life—in many ways a sad one—but it also reproduces a large quantity of her work, which consists entirely of colored-pencil drawings. In a sense, the book is in lieu of a museum show; while it looks very much like an exhibition catalogue, there is no exhibition—at least not yet.
