AMERICANS TYPICALLY don’t get much credit for radical art innovations before the Second World War. Especially when it comes to abstract art, Europeans are generally considered the pioneers. Kandinsky, Kupka, Malevich, Mondrian, Delaunay—these are the names we repeatedly hear, with a new addition, Hilma af Klint, recently added to the canon in the wake of an attendance-record-breaking show at the Guggenheim in New York in 2018–19. However, American artists were in on the game right from the beginning. In 1913, Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell, two American expats in Paris, invented an abstract method they called Synchromism, and they garnered a lot of publicity for it. ON AUGUST 12, Selkirk Auctioneers & Appraisers of St. Louis, Mo., will be conducting a highly unusual auction—the sale of a cave in rural eastern Missouri that contains what scholars believe is the greatest group of Pre-Columbian polychrome wall paintings in North America and Mesoamerica. Picture Cave, as it is known, sits on 43 acres of land in a remote region where the prairie gives way to the Ozark plateau, and Selkirk is offering the cave plus the land on behalf of the owners, the Busch family of Missouri, with an estimate of $1–3 million. The iconography in Picture Cave—actually a system of two connected caves—is of such quantity, quality, and diversity that it is considered to be of comparable importance to the prehistoric sites of Cahokia, near St. Louis,…

LINO TAGLIAPIETRA, the greatest living master of the Venetian glass tradition, has been working for over 70 years but never stops innovating, creating techniques to express color, form, and light in new ways. His latest series, dating from early 2019, is called “Aquilone,” the Italian word for kite, and it takes inspiration from the colorful kites Tagliapietra and his friends used to fly on the island of Murano when he was a boy. The murrine (colored patterns within the glass cane) in the Aquilone are oval rather than the usual square shape, allowing greater luminosity and transmission of color through the sculptures. WITHOUT COLOR AND form, there would be no art at all. Traditionally, artists used them to represent what they saw around them, but in the modernist era, they began to use them for their own sake. By way of radical simplification, abstract painting gave pure color and form center stage. This revolutionary achievement is center stage this summer at Addison Rowe Gallery in Santa Fe, in an exhibition titled “Color and Form.” As the gallery explains it, “There are no objects represented in these paintings; the paintings are the objects. ELAINE HORWITCH hit Santa Fe like a force of nature in the early 1970s and by the time of her death in 1991 had exerted an outsized influence on the city’s development as a contemporary-art center. The larger-than-life dealer was known for her distinctive “cowgirl” getup of cowboy hats and boots, denim skirts, and concho belts and kept a pearl-handled pistol in her purse that she liked to pull out and shock clients with. IN MAY, AT Rago’s two-day 20th Century Design and Modern Design sales, the Tiffany Studios Dandelion Lamp seen here set a new world auction record for Tiffany. During bidding, the lamp drew considerable attention, with more than a dozen phone bidders and a number of participants on online platforms vying for the historic piece. Three bidders in particular duked it out until a price of nearly $4 million was reached. Created at the dawn of a new century, this Dandelion Lamp represents Louis Comfort Tiffany at the height of his powers. In the years leading up to 1900, Tiffany had expanded production and artistic scope; he established a glass factory, a bronze casting department, and an enamel workshop and introduced lamps as well as Favrile glass. THE DENVER gallery K Contemporary opens “Kevin Sloan | Soft Monuments” on July 10. The exhibition, which features a selection of paintings and sculptures by Sloan, a Denver-based artist, runs through August 21. A pervading theme of the works in the show is the memorialization of the ephemeral. Many of the objects Sloan portrays in his pictorial, somewhat surreal paintings are delicate or perishable, and are thus made permanent through his representation of them. In Bind My Song To This Rock (2021, acrylic on canvas), for instance, a thin piece of lace embroidered with the words of its title hangs within a moody landscape. MOMENTUM GALLERY, in downtown Asheville, N.C., will be mounting five exhibitions this summer, all running in the gallery’s expansive 15,000 space from July 16–September 30. “Picture That” is a collection of prints and monotypes by artists including Chakaia Booker, Will Cotton, Raymond Pettibon, Sara Sanders, and Chuck Webster and is curated by master printer Phil Sanders, author of Prints and Their Makers. Paul Sattler will be having a solo show at Momentum; he makes oil paintings and drawings that embody enigmatic narratives and sometimes reimagine paintings from art history with looser and more abstract compositions. NEDRA MATTEUCCI Galleries is building on a nearly 50-year legacy of art dealing in Santa Fe. Founded in 1972 and acquired by its current owners, Nedra and Richard Matteucci, in 1988, it specializes in 19th and 20th-century American art, including the Taos Society of Artists, Santa Fe modernists, classic American Western art, and American Impressionism and Modernism. Matteucci’s stable of contemporary artists represents the expressive possibilities of Western art today. THERE WILL BE some auction action amid the art events in Santa Fe this summer. The Santa Fe Art Auction will be holding two sales, each timed to coincide with one of the city’s famous summer outdoor art and craft markets. “New Mexico Now: Spanish Colonial to Spanish Market” will be held on July 24 (the Traditional Spanish Market takes place on the Santa Fe Plaza on July 24–25) and features works made by members of the Spanish-American community in New Mexico, which dates back to the 16th century. The art of political propaganda was perfected thousands of years ago. The ancient Romans, in particular, excelled at communicating sensationalized messages about their leaders through artistic means. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection is rife with prime examples in marble. For instance, a marble portrait bust of the emperor Gaius, known as Caligula (37–41 A.D.) imitates the facial attributes of Augustus, Caligula’s predecessor in the Julio-Claudian dynasty, stressing a connection with Rome’s first (and as of 14 A.D., deified) emperor. Conversely, a marble portrait bust of Marcus Aurelius (circa 170 A.D.), depicts the emperor and Stoicist as a “philosopher king,” with a mature, wise face and the long beard of the Greek philosophers; he’s also portrayed as a stalwart commander-in-chief with his shoulders draped in a military tunic and cloak.…

Henry McCarty, William H. Bonney, William Antrim—whatever names he was born with or went by, he will always be known as Billy the Kid. The Old West outlaw, born in New York City in 1859 to Irish-American parents, started out as what we would call a juvenile delinquent. After his father died, he and his mother migrated westward, finally settling in the New Mexico Territory. At 15, Billy was an orphan; at 16, he had already been arrested for stealing food and breaking into a Chinese laundry. He committed his first murder in Arizona in 1877, then fled back to New Mexico, where he became a cattle thief. He participated in the Lincoln County War of 1878, which was basically a feud involving competing ranching and dry-goods businesses and an…

THE PIONEERING painter Elizabeth Murray spent two years in Buffalo, N.Y. She taught at Daemen College (then Rosary Hill College) in the city from 1965 to 1967. It was a transitional period in her career. The Chicago native had graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1958 and then decamped for the Bay Area, earning an MFA from Mills College in 1964. When her stint in Buffalo ended, she moved to New York City. There she developed her mature style, a mix of abstraction and cartoonish figuration typically showcased on wildly shaped canvases. LEPRINCE FINE ART has been in Charleston, S.C., since 2011. Its founder, Kevin LePrince, is an artist as well as a dealer and looks for certain qualities in the artists he shows. Husband-and-wife painters James Calk and Betsy Havens have those qualities, and the gallery has embraced the evolution of their work. “Creativity has to be nurtured,” says LePrince, “and once an artist is accepted in the gallery, they are given the freedom and support to evolve.” Calk’s work is gestural abstraction with a suggestion of landscape, while Havens’ is figurative and concentrates on street scenes. THE WHEELWRIGHT Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe has two exhibitions on view this summer. “Shonto Begay: Eyes of the World” (through October 3) showcases the wildly original painting of Begay, who is described as a “Navajo Neo-Impressionist.” Begay’s sharply detailed works, which vibrate with color and energy, depict the physical and spiritual landscapes of Navajo country, as well as scenes of life on the reservation. Raised among ceremonial singers, Begay developed a style of mark-making that he terms “visual chants.” His swirling brushstrokes bear a resemblance to those of another spiritual artist, Vincent van Gogh. “Indigenous Women: Border Matters” (also through October 3) presents four women artists who work on either side of the U.S.–Mexico border—Makaye Lewis (Tohono O’odham), Daisy Quezada Ureña (Mexican-American), M. The Colombian-born artist Olga de Amaral is one of the most important voices in postwar Latin American abstraction. Known for large-scale pieces that are intricately woven in brilliant color and, frequently, covered in shimmering gold or silver leaf, she’s also a luminary of textile art in general. But her path to fiber art actually began with architecture. That’s what she studied at the Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca in her native city of Bogotá, Colombia, in the early 1950s. After she received a degree in architectural drafting, she applied to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. One of the only fields of study Cranbrook allowed students who were not pursuing degrees to undertake was a one-year fabric design and weaving program, so that’s the one she enrolled in.…
