Artbank On Display: The story of Artbank, Australia's most visible art collection celebrates forty-five years of Australia's national art collection and leasing program. Adelaide Contemporary Experimental 2 August to 20 September 2025 South Australia Entering a hostile environment of shards, spikes, walls, weeds and noise, in this exhibition of Adelaide-based artist Mark Valenzuela, audiences encounter an installation combining ceramics, steel, textiles, timber, sound and more. TarraWarra Museum of Art 9 August to 9 November 2025 Melbourne Melbourne-based artist Rose Nolan is known for an enduring interest in material, process and repetition; her bold forms, constructed from utilitarian materials such as cardboard and hessian, are often shaped by physical labour and seriality. Breathing Helps spans installations, photography, printed matter and text-based works. Here, recurring performative and spatial threads in Nolan's practice are presented alongside new site-specific commissions responding to the museum's architecture. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Until 7 September 2025 New South Wales Following Sydney-based artist HOSSEI's creation of costumes that “heal,” in ESSSENSSSE, the tenacity of the human spirit is explored, corporeal human qualities are stripped away and what's underneath is revealed. The artist's fascination with sand dollar sea creatures is on show here; their shape, features and how, in mediaeval times, sand dollars were believed to be a mermaid currency. Queensland Art Gallery 16 August 2025 to 26 January 2026 Brisbane Under a Modern Sun showcases the work of Queensland artists and those working in the state in the middle decades of the twentieth century. The display includes artworks by renowned Brisbane-based painters Vida Lahey and William Bustard and luminaries from the regions, including Kenneth Macqueen and Joe Rootsey. Ararat Gallery TAMA 2 August to 16 November 2025 Victoria Combining autobiographical and shared Aboriginal-Australian experiences, incisive analysis and wry humour, Wadawurrung artist Kait James has carved out a unique visual language based in the reappropriation of racialised products. Colloquially identified as ‘Aboriginalia’, these mass-produced, commercial objects, primarily created from the 1950s through to the 1980s for consumption by non-Indigenous tourists, depict culturally insensitive and racially stereotyped imagery, designs and motifs. The East Kimberley Jaru painter Janet Dreamer (1959–2021) was a unique image maker. Known affectionately as “Dreamer,” the artist grew up in the 1960s at her birthplace of Old Flora Valley in the east Kimberley near Halls Creek. She and her five siblings hunted, fished and travelled with their elders, learning the traditional ways. Later, she moved to Kirkimbie Station as a kitchen worker and had two children, then to Billiluna Station and eventually to Halls Creek where she joined Yarliyil Art Centre in 2013.
