The art of collecting and its result is highlighted in this issue. An art collection, whether private or public, is a direct reflection of what we value, both materially and emotionally. There is a great deal of symbolism inherent in the objects. Many of the exhibitions held throughout this month showcase institutional or private collections, focus on the accumulation of inspirational objects and ideas, and/or gather the work of a number of artists which share common curatorial themes. Straitjacket Until 20 April 2025 New South Wales The paintings of Newcastle-based artist Paul Maher inhabit the edges between spaces – the compact and the empty, the urban and the untamed. Drawn to places where people manipulate an urban environment, where they express themselves, often without intent; here, the traces people leave behind inspire paintings that tell us something about ourselves. Bundanon Art Museum Until 8 June 2025 New South Wales For Thinking together: Exchanges with the natural world, Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan have created a large-scale accumulative sculpture and drawing installation exploring the tree as a symbol of habitats and community. The Shoalhaven landscape made a strong impression on the artists when they undertook site visits to Bundanon in 2023/24; their new work, REFLECTIONS/HABITATIONS, created an impulse to honour the natural world that is shared. National Portrait Gallery 12 April to 20 July 2025 Australian Capital Territory Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist Thom Roberts invites audiences to see the world through his eyes. Identifying as the CountryLink Express and the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, Roberts' portraits morph people with trains and buildings.
