Letter from the Editor

Glass has the ability to transmit, absorb, or reflect light, and it is this light that draws everything into focus. In this issue, our cover artist, Kokatha and Nukunu artist Yhonnie Scarce, uses the medium, its artistry and aesthetic beauty, to create powerful installations, such as glass yams hung like oversized chandeliers in the gallery space, illuminating the past and making visible the ongoing effects of colonisation on First Nations people. Scarce finds the transparency of glass an ideal quality for truth-telling. We also explore the concept of glass as a lens, highlighting the art of photography as artists capture portraits and scenes that document the then and now, educate us about past and present right and wrongs, and shape possible futures and realities. Takeover

International conceptual artist Marina Abramović and the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) selected eight artists – Dr Christian Thompson, Collective Absentia, Indigo Perry, Li Binyuan, Melati Suryodarmo, Mike Parr, SJ Norman and Yingmei Duan – to engage in site-specific, longdurational work at Adelaide Festival Centre's Space Theatre and nearby venues from 1 to 4 March, as part of the 2024 Adelaide Festival, from 1 to 17 March. The ninth work on display will be a video installation by Abramović, guiding visitors through aspects of The Abramović Method, a participatory experience and exploration of being present in both time and space, preparing the public to experience long durational work. Blackwood River Arts Trail

Art news Celebrating the arts in the heart of Western Australia's southwest, in the Blackwood River region that includes Nannup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Donnybrook-Balingup, and Boyup Brook, the Blackwood River Arts Trail features nearly seventy artists, including painters Lori Pensini, John Garde and Miranda Free, renowned sculptor Kim Perrier, weaver Liz Janney and many more opening their home studios for an intriguing glimpse into their processes and creative environments; and presenting group exhibitions in more than thirty-five venues including cafes, sculpture gardens, gift shops, collective spaces and local galleries from 23 March to 7 April. Ryan McGinley YEARBOOK

Ryan McGinley's YEARBOOK is a record and celebration of community, documenting a vibrant crowd of creatives, musicians, and artists in New York City. Against bright candy-coloured backgrounds in fluorescent blues, pinks, and greens, McGinley's subjects smile and laugh, nude yet completely at ease in front of the camera, occasionally blurred or caught in motion. Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe

From 1 to 18 March, the iconic white sands of Cottesloe Beach will once again be embellished by a vibrant display of contemporary outdoor sculpture in Perth's annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Celebrating the event's twentieth year, seventy artists from fifteen countries have been invited to show their work, including renowned British sculptor Sean Henry, who will display his popular Seated Man figure as this year's Tourism WA Invited International Artist. Among the exhibitors will also be forty-two Australian sculptors, thirtyone of whom are from Western Australia. Inner Sanctum

Art news In response to the pandemic isolation of recent years, the 18th Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, on view at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, from 1 March to 2 June, offers a survey of contemporary art across the country that is introspective, reflective, and hopeful. Curated by Jose Da Silva, this year's biennial edition, titled Inner Sanctum, focuses on artists and poets who explore the complexities of the human condition. Ten Thousand Suns

Led by Artistic Directors Cosmin Costinaș and Inti Guerrero, the 24th Biennale of Sydney, titled Ten Thousand Suns, proposes celebration as both a method and a source of joy. With an exhibition of contemporary art at its core, the event draws inspiration from histories of queer resistance and of coming together to thrive in the face of injustice. Reading the Rooms: Behind the paintings of the State Library of NSW

NewSouth Reading the Rooms offers an insight into the surprisingly vast collection of paintings held in the collection of the State Library of New South Wales, with works ranging from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries, with an emphasis on paintings from the Colonial era. Interestingly, editors Richard Neville and Rachel Franks have made their focus on the history and provenance of the paintings rather than their artistic merit, thereby encouraging the reader to delve into the background stories that reveal so much about the society and culture of the times.
