Human impact on the environment is direct and, in some cases, irreversible. Pollution can affect the air we breathe, our soil and our waterways, causing significant damage to ecosystems, loss of biodiversity, and global warming. This issue touches on these concerns. Our cover artist, Tai Snaith, introduces the theme with a playful yet educational painting from her series Hierarchy of needs. The artist explores the different needs of her favourite creatures, from food and water to play and work, with a focus on the important roles these animals play in Earth’s biodiversity. Within this issue, works either highlight the damage caused by humans and the importance of nature, or interpret and present looming and new futures. Others merely depict the current beauty of the landscape and its inhabitants in appreciation.…

The newly launched Melbourne gallery The Front Room, located on Shamrock Street, Richmond, operates between art exhibitions and a design concept store with an ever-evolving curation of vintage and found objects, as well as commissioned works from local creatives. Goolugatup Heathcote Gallery Until 26 March 2023 Western Australia In Beijing Realism, Chinese and ChineseAustralian artists Han Bing, Hu Xiangqian, Li Xiaofei, and Tami Xiang explore connections between history and the everyday through photography, video, and installation. The exhibition muses on a Chinese poem about tree branches that wanted to pierce the sky but only managed to poke a few small holes. The artists’ works, depicting peasants, students, and migrant workers, are these branches, poking holes in history and exposing its effects felt today - from the Cultural Revolution, the one-child policy, and economic reforms to the present.…

Botanically Porcelain Northern Centre for Contemporary Art 2 March to 15 April 2023 Northern Territory Northern Centre for Contemporary Art presents Darwin-based ceramicist Dawn Beasley’s third instalment of her largest installation to date. Botanically Porcelain is a floor-based field of more than 1,000 hand-built porcelain sculptures that speaks to the simultaneous and conflicting qualities of nature - fragility and endurance. The installation offers a similar feel to a wildflower meadow scene; however, upon closer view, one can admire each object’s distinction owed to Beasley’s careful crafting with gold lustre. ACE 2023 Studio Program artists Adelaide Contemporary Experimental (ACE) have recently announced the successful recipients of their 2023 Studio Program. Congratulations to South Australian artists Teresa Busuttil (Helpmann Academy Studio Residency), Georgia Button (Adelaide Central School of Art Residency), Brad Darkson, Jennifer Mathews, and True Truong. Busuttil’s multi-disciplinary practice investigates personal and familial history, the Maltese diaspora, archives and shared pools of memory. Button’s multi-disciplinary practice embraces movingimage, installation and sound to explore affect, loss, personal histories, and rural environments. Darkson’s practice is informed by his First Nations and Angio-Australian heritage, and encompasses carving, sound, sculpture, multimedia installation and painting.
