A pair of Levi's jeans from the 1880s found in an abandoned mine five years ago has sold for nearly $90,000 at an auction in a small town in New Mexico. The jeans - found by Michael Harris, a self-described “denim archaeologist” - were bought by Kyle Hautner and Zip Stevenson, a veteran of the vintage denim market. “We didn't have any plans to buy the jeans together until the auction started, which is kind of insane looking back on it,” Stevenson told CNN. DIRECTOR KATHY KELSEY FOLEY, who for more than two decades has guided impressive facility, staff, collection and programmatic growth while earning regional and national recognition at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin, is retiring from the museum December 31. Assistant Director Matt Foss will assume the directorship. Foley first served as director of the museum known for its internationally acclaimed Birds in Art exhibition from 1987-1991. In 1998, she returned, serving with distinction since. Foley was inducted as a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters in 2014; received the Wisconsin Visual Art Achievement Award in 2016; and was honored by the Association of Midwest Museums in 2020 with the Distinguished Career Award. A Michigan-based photography dealer has been charged with defrauding elderly collectors out an estimated $1.6 million in a scheme where she allegedly faked serious illness and created phony employees to mislead consignors. Wendy Halsted Beard of the Wendy Halsted Gallery in Birmingham, a suburb of Detroit, was charged with wire fraud and bank fraud in a U.S. District Court in October in a convoluted, yearslong scheme that preyed largely on the elderly. Beard, who inherited the well-established art gallery founded more than fifty years ago by her millionaire father, allegedly scammed seniors by taking their rare art on consignment, selling it and then keeping the profits. GEORGE NELSON (1908-1986) is known as the designer of the Marshmallow Sofa, Coconut Chair and Ball Clock. Yet these iconic pieces represent only a fraction of the prodigious output of someone who shaped the American design scene following World War II. Over the course of forty years, Nelson produced work, both on his own and in collaboration with a talented team of associates, that includes hundreds of furniture, building, exhibition and graphic designs, as well as nearly a dozen books and more than 150 magazine articles. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Nelson studied architecture at Yale University. Entering the profession in the depths of the Great Depression, Nelson was awarded a Rome Prize, which provided a two-year stipend to study at the American Academy in Rome, where he lived from 1932-34.…

It was the beginning of the Space Age, a monumental moment not only in the world of science and politics, but in design. Suddenly, futuristic stylings emerged in everything from cars to vacuum cleaners. So, it shouldn't have come as too big of a surprise when in 1958 Philco debuted Predicta, a television set it promoted as the “TV of Tomorrow.” And yet it was.
