ANDY WARHOL

(1928-1987) was born “Andrew Warhola” to Slovakian immigrant parents in Pittsburgh. His subject matter was taken from popular culture: advertising, comics, magazines and packaging. He produced works quickly by transferring images onto canvas or paper through photography and screenprinting. Warhol wanted to make art showing no trace of being produced by hand. His interest in mass production reflected America's fast-developing consumer culture. His New York studio, “The Factory,” became a popular meeting place for artists, dropouts, celebrities and bands, “Why don't you paint some cows” suggested art dealer Ivan Karp. Consequently, Warhol began his series of cow screenprints. Warhol said “when he [Ivan] saw the huge cow heads that I was going to have made into wallpaper he was shocked.” This was paper designs by Warhol He hung paintings on his vibrant cow wallpaper at his 1976 retrospective at the Whitney Museum…

His work was notable for its raw drama and its intimacy with danger, the product of the risks he took to immerse himself in combat. Back in the early twentieth century, when people had to leave the house if they wanted to buy something, the biggest problem in the book business was bookstores. There were not enough of them. Bookstores were clustered in big cities, and many were really gift shops with a few select volumes for sale. Publishers sold a lot of their product by mail order and through book clubs, distribution systems that provide pretty much the opposite of what most people consider a fun shopping experience—browsing and impulse buying.
