MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND the Summer Flea Market, Antique and Collectible Show, Sunday, August 21, at the Jones County Fairgrounds, 800 North Maple Street, Monticello, Iowa. For the past 37 years, the show was held at the Maquoketa, Iowa, fairgrounds but has been moved permanently to Monticello. This is one of Iowa's largest flea markets with 120 exhibitors expected (indoor and outdoor, weather permitting) selling a vast array of antiques and vintage items. The show runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $4, but free for anyone 9 and younger. Parking is free. Early bird shoppers are welcome between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. Early admission is $10. Like most collectors, I own several items I don't ever intend to sell. Among my treasured cache are more Napier jewelry designs from the 1950s than any other timeframe. This includes one of my very first antique shop jewelry purchases in the 1990s, an outstanding Napier silver plated Maltese cross necklace with powder blue rhinestones. NEW YORK – On the heels of the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the jacket retired astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin was wearing when he set foot on the moon sold for a recordbreaking $2,772,500. The in-flight coverall jacket features the astronaut's name above the historic Apollo 11 mission emblem. The jacket is made of a fireproof, tightly woven silica fiber called Beta Cloth used in the production of Apollo spaceflight suits. The sale, which took place at Sotheby's in New York on July 26, made the garment the most expensive jacket sold at auction, as well as the most valuable American artifact flown in space, according to Sotheby's. An original Stormtrooper helmet made for and used in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, George Lucas’ 1977 groundbreaking science-fiction adventure, sold for $192,000 at Julien's Auctions and Turner Classic Movies “Hollywood Legends” event in July. The Stormtroopers were conceptualized by Lucas to appear intimidating to movie audiences. One of the primary design goals was to conceal what was beneath the armor, so that moviegoers would find the Stormtroopers intriguing and somewhat mysterious. With this goal in mind, Andrew Ainsworth was faced with the challenge of fabricating the homogenous armor with strategic undercuts to completely disguise the actor in the costume. When Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier met March 8, 1971, in New York's Madison Square Garden, the event was billed as “The Fight of the Century.” Both men entered the ring undefeated. Frazier held the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World, but it was Ali who many considered the real champ. Stripped of his crown and forced into a nearly four-year exile from boxing for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, Ali was loved by some and reviled by others.
