DALLAS – Batman keeps besting himself. Hot on the heels of a world record in November when an issue of Detective Comics No. 27 from 1939 sold for $1.5 million, the finest-known copy of 1940’s Batman No. 1 recently shattered that record, selling for $2.22 million on January 14 at Heritage Auctions - far and away the highest price ever realized for a comic book featuring Batman. The issue, the only copy ever to receive a 9.4 grade from the Certified Guaranty Company, was already a record-setter before the start of Heritage Auctions’ four-day Comics and Comic Art event. An educator who grew up in old houses, Matthew Domas is partial to stained glass. When he encountered the front door of this house in Memphis, Tennessee, he was smitten. Having married in 2003, he and Elizabeth were looking for a home where they could raise children. Elizabeth, a co-owner of a nursing business, grew up near New Orleans. Although its simplicity reminded her of her home city’s architecture, she wasn’t convinced that the neglected house could be brought back. “It was in terrible shape,” she says. “Matthew had to convince me.” The house was built in 1903 — a 3,800-square-foot, 2-1/2-story foursquare in the city’s Central Gardens neighborhood. A 1952 Topps baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle is now the most valuable sports card in history, selling for $5.2 million, or almost five times as much as Mantle made during his 18-year, Hall-of-Fame career with the New York Yankees Rob Gough, an actor and entrepreneur, bought the coveted Mantle card in a private transaction. The card was last sold for $2.88 million in 2018. It is one of only six Mint 9 versions of the card known to exist.
