Her father scraped by, finding work where he could to support his family of seven. She survived. The Depression ended only with the onslaught of WWII. By then she was out of the house looking for work. When the war hit there were all sorts of jobs for women. Lucky her. DALLAS – A copy of Vampirella #1 was among the titles in high demand with collectors at Heritage Auctions’ first-ever sale dedicated to CGC-certified magazines. A Red Star Copy of Playboy #1 was also enormously popular in the auction, which yielded results well above pre-auction estimates and realized $118,224 in total sales. Nearly two dozen bidders made a play for the first issue of Vampirella (Warren, 1969), CGC NM 9.4, white pages, before it sold for $7,200 to lead the sale. With a cover and frontispiece by Frank Frazetta, art by Neal Adams and Reed Crandall and a story by Forrest J. Ackerman, the issue includes the origin and first appearance of Vampirella. There is a wonderful 16 x 20 pole barn here that I converted into a refinishing shop, with lots of drawers for my furniture hardware, supplies etc. During that time, I have also run an estate sale business, buying tons of hand tools, parts and smalls. DALLAS – A rare lamp by French designers Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti is among the highlights from an important California collection in Heritage Auctions’ Design Auction April 20 in Dallas. Other highlights in the 245-lot sale include an extensive collection of studio glass by elite artists from the movement, as well as a selection of furniture, accessories, windows and drawings by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. The Garouste and Bonetti Dawson floor lamp, 1990, is made of gilt iron and stands 97-1/2 inches tall. It has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-30,000. When Susan Mullikin started her business, Mother and Daughter Vintage Clothing and Antiques, in 1990, she sold a mix of things. But a couple of years later when she became interested in antique clothing and narrowed her focus on just that, it widened her business opportunities — including providing some clothing for one of the biggest movies of all time. “There have been a few times in my antique career that I have felt truly honored. Once for sure when I was called to provide clothing for what I feel is the greatest movie ever made, Titanic. Top-selling items in the Julien’s Auctions event included a classic 1930 Ford convertible that was seen in the opening of Day’s 1980s talk show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends.” The car sold for $96,000. A Golden Globe award she received in 1962 went for $25,600. A red lacquer piano from her son sold for $44,800, while a planter decorated with brass elephants from close friend Rock Hudson sold for $15,625.
