THIS WEEK AN ANGLER who carried a beached dolphin a mile back to sea, where it swam away strongly, is being praised for his actions. Steve Hedges was digging for bait with his friend, Aaron Cole, when he heard shouts coming from a family that’d encountered the stranded mammal. “Instinct took over and we both ran to see how we could help,” Steve said. “The dolphin was still alive, so we picked it up immediately to try and get it back to the water.” Steve thinks it had become trapped while chasing mullet and flatfish, before being caught out by the quickly receding tide. “We carried it as gently as possible through the sticky mud to the sea, where it swam off. THERE are some rods that you might think are so precious they probably should live out their days in glass cases. IT SEEMED to be written in the stars that the mighty Birmingham Anglers Association team had their name on the 1971 National Championship trophy, fished on the River Severn. It was to be the last national decided on total weight and Brum’s team of superstars, under the magnificent captaincy of Clive Smith, knew the river inside out and were all capable of maximising their pegs.
