MOST town and city centres have rivers running through them, creating a goldmine of convenient and comfortable fishing – especially in winter, when fish seek the slightly warmer water of built-up areas.
Add to that fewer predators, and a food source from people feeding ducks and swans, and you have a haven for roach, bream, chub, perch and even carp. What’s more, on many such stretches the fishing is free!
The embankment section of the Great Ouse in the heart of Bedford is one such stretch, yet it’s criminally underfished. Why is anyone’s guess, because it’s totally free, access is good, the banks are flat and clean, and the river is rammed with fish.
