A BIG crucian was top of Matthew Fernandez’s hit list – but he got a lot more than he bargained for when he smashed his personal best no feewer than six times. While many anglers were completing this season’s crucian campaign, the Southampton-based rod went in search of his first-ever 3lb-plus fish and struck gold during an incredible 24-hour stint. SEA anglers are hoping for one of the best cod fishing seasons in decades after forecasters predict the biggest south coast tides for 25 years. These conditions could lead to huge numbers of od heading closer inshore than normal in search of food items stirred up by the winter storms. FERRY Meadows has shown incredible bream fishing potential this summer, with huge hauls in matches, but it is the equally impressive predator fishing that is all set to take centre stage this winter. Both reservoirs at the Peterborough complex have been in fine form this year, and a series of pike and zander matches has now been arranged. Five contests will be staged, with the first on October 4 and the last on February 14, 2016. HAVING read about the ‘renaissance’ of luncheon meat as a bait for specimen fish, it is now proved by the capture of a monster chub from Yorkshire’s River Swale. It was caught on a weighted hook, a method that the brilliant Trefor West promoted... indeed Partridge sold some hooks already wrapped in lead wire, but these are no longer available. It is perfectly legal to wrap lead wire around hooks, as long as it is an intrinsic part of the rig like a loaded float or swimfeeder. However it must be ON the hook. HOW unlucky Alan Scotthorne was not to be crowned a record sixth time as World Champion. He won his section both days, but as he drew the lower weight half of his section – each section is now split in half and produces two one-point scores – he had to settle for bronze. Drennan Team England came back from the dead on day one to blow the field away and also pick up bronze. I’ve no idea whether they made technical errors or fell foul of the draw bag, but the second day demolition job shows they knew the right way by Sunday.…

1 Place your worms in a landing net and riddle off as much of the mud and dirt as you possibly can. 2 Put the worms into a bait box and chop them up finely. A LOT of anglers have switched on to this float pattern over the past couple of seasons, but I still keep meeting people who tell me they’ve never tried them. Regular readers of this column will know that my river floatfishing always tends to be based around an equation of sensitivity versus buoyancy. Slow rivers need fine, sensitive inserts while fast ones need short and very buoyant patterns. 1 You need a sticky mix for the river, so I start off by blending a bag of Crab and Krill Method Mix with a bag of micro pellet feed. 2 Pour off the liquid from a pint of hemp and add a teaspoonful of Bite liquid yeast extract. 3 Dampen down the feeder mix with the hemp juice. This gives the groundbait a wonderful aroma that barbel and chub, in particular, will love. 4 Because this is such a sticky groundbait it is important to mix it slowly until the correct consistency is reached. A SOCIAL session with a friend produced a flurry of fish for Chris Oakley, topped by this 50lb 10oz mirror which had not been caught for more than a year. The carp, which was 6lb up in weight, was part of a nine-fish haul at Grenville Lake in Cambridgeshire. “Amazing fish, amazing lake,” said the Coventry angler after his three-night stay. A FEW years ago I was excited about going after chub on my local River Swale. The morning came and I rushed in the garage and started frantically sorting my gear. My over excitement, however, led to me snapping the tip off my favourite rod. Not a great start, but I quickly sourced my other rod and was soon on my way. AN ILLEGAL angler from Birmingham was left with a huge debt to pay after he received a court bill totalling £782 for being caught fishing without a rod licence. Mareks Doniks, of Smethwick, West Midlands, was found guilty at Stroud Magistrates’ Court after he was caught by Environment Agency officers on the River Severn’s Ripple Fishery in Gloucestershire in August. Doniks, who pleaded not guilty, was fined £50 with £717 costs and told to pay a victim surcharge of £15.…

THE nation’s rivers continue to throw up regular surprises and it was the turn of the Thames this week when Adam Haley took this 7lb-plus golden orfe. Bream were the main target for the Staines angler, who fed a big bed of corn and hemp to try to tempt the shoals. A 6mm halibut pellet and a grain of corn were placed over the top on a leger rig. A RECORD-breaking commercial fishery has eradicated poaching and illegal fishing thanks to online videos and social media. Venue bosses at Drayton Reservoir are urging other fisheries to follow their example after it began a campaign to educate and welcome the growing number of eastern European carp anglers to the prolific Northants venue. FENCE END The swims around the fence from the path from Milton Ferry Bridge have been fishing consistently for bream for several months, especially if the wind is blowing. Regularly cast a feeder between 30m and 50m and expect the bream the move in after an hour or so. MONUMENT If you fancy a day catching silverfish on the pole, then head to this area. BRITAIN’S BEST RIVER ANGLER WRITES ONLY IN AnglingTimes ON THE second day of the recent River Thames Festival I won my section using a method that I’ve put to good effect on a number of rivers from over the past few years. It’s great for catching roach in deeper swims from 6ft to 12ft where there is minimal flow and where there are problems with small fish intercepting maggots and casters on the way down. The method involves the use of a long six-metre Bolo rod, a light, thin-tipped Bolo float and some hemp and tares (otherwise known as ‘pigeon peas’). If you don’t own a Bolo rod, you can use a take-apart design as long as the tip section is soft, because you need to pick up on bites…

READ THE BAIT DOCTOR’S TIPS EVERY WEEK IN AnglingTimes METHOD MIX This is made sticky, so as to take 30 minutes or longer to break down in the current. Mine is a carp-style groundbait, to which I add hemp, dampened 3mm and micro pellets. Moisture is by way of the liquid from a tin of cooked hemp. HOOKBAIT All hookbaits will work with the Method in rivers, but bear in mind that they should be small fish-proof. The Angling Trust has teamed up with Sport England and the Environment Agency to run the nationwide research project, which will take a detailed look into the views and experiences of UK anglers and enable them to play their part in making major changes to the UK fishing agenda. ALL the usual feeder hookbaits – pellets, mini boilies and meat – are effective with the Method, but try and use a small bait. If you think about it, the Method is delivering a stream of small particles, and the fish will be on the lookout for these small morsels. Plonk a big bait in front of them and they can show a take-it-or-leave-it attitude. I’m amazed at how effective tiny pieces of punched Peperami are when feeder fishing on heavily pressured stretches of the Severn.
