I hear from many quilters that they sew less in the summer months because they are spending more time outdoors. Is that you? I do enjoy that during the summer I can be out hiking trails, riding my bicycle, or hanging out at a campsite. However, during the warmest months of the year, the heat and Midwest humidity often drive me indoors to the comfortable climes of my sewing room. I attend an out-of-state retreat every July to get out of the heat and enjoy quilting with friends. This year, I added another retreat to my calendar in late August. PLAN FOR CUTTING Our project instructions list pieces in the order they should be cut to make the best use of your fabrics. Always consider the fabric grain before cutting. The arrow on a pattern piece indicates which direction the grain should run. One or more straight edges of a pattern piece should follow the fabric’s lengthwise or crosswise grain. The lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvages (the tightly finished edges), has the least amount of stretch. The crosswise grain, perpendicular to the selvages, has a little more give. The edge of any pattern piece that will be on the outside of a block or quilt should be cut on the lengthwise grain. Do not use the selvage of a woven fabric in a quilt. When washed, it may…
