Every year at this time I look forward to a quilt retreat with friends from eight different states. It’s time together that we savor and an opportunity to work on sewing projects without interruption. Now I need to decide which projects to pack up and take along! Cool Summer by Maggi Honeyman, page 54, is at the top of my list. I’ll use scraps to make the baby quilt version from the Optional Sizes Chart on page 59. Marushka Volkova’s sweet tote bag, Girl Talk, on page 66, reminds me of the book bags my mom made for my siblings and me for summer visits to the library when we were small. TIP NO. 1 To get accurate Flying Geese units, mark the squares diagonally using a thin marking tool such as a mechanical pencil. A thinner line helps you more accurately sew on the diagonal. TIP NO. 2 If your machine sucks the point of your Flying Geese unit into the machine while sewing on the diagonal, switch to a straight stitch plate. This plate only has a small hole for the needle to go through, which prevents this issue. You also can start sewing on the diagonal from the center of the rectangle instead of the point. PLAN FOR CUTTING Our project instructions list pieces in the order they should be cut to make the best use of your fabrics. Always consider the fabric grain before cutting. The arrow on a pattern piece indicates which direction the grain should run. One or more straight edges of a pattern piece should follow the fabric’s lengthwise or crosswise grain. The lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvages (the tightly finished edges), has the least amount of stretch. The crosswise grain, perpendicular to the selvages, has a little more give. The edge of any pattern piece that will be on the outside of a block or quilt should be cut on the lengthwise grain. Do not use the selvage of a woven fabric in a quilt. When washed, it may…
