Where do you find inspiration? I find it in the everyday: a mosaic floor, a billboard graphic, the architecture or details of a structure. Social media also gives me ideas. On Instagram, for example, I primarily follow quilting-related accounts and enjoy scrolling through them to see what quilters are making and what’s new or popular in our industry. Instagram, in fact, is where we found the five creatives in “Meet the Makers,” page 11, who willingly shared their quilting connections with us. I learn from you, our readers, as well. But Vickeidy Plybon can! “In 2018 I decided to make quilting my New Year’s resolution,” she says. “I started with a quilt kit that I bought from Craftsy, and I haven’t stopped.” Vickeidy, who was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, grew up watching her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother sew. JOANNA: What is your definition of modern quilting? ALISON: I know that I am considered a modern fabric designer and quilter, but I don’t really think of my work in those terms, and I’m not concerned with categorizing it. There are certainly elements that come to mind when we think of modern quilting: bold colors or the opposite (low-volume minimalism), large blocks or tiny ones (disrupting the scale), and reimagining ideas inspired by those who came before us. With a mother and grandmother who made tied quilts, she was exposed to quilting early on and made quilts over the years.
