Every December, my family gathers at my brother’s home for a day of decorating gingerbread houses. In 1978, his mother-in-law, Marlene Bushman, a talented cake decorator, started an annual tradition of baking gingerbread houses for her daughters to decorate. When her oldest daughter and my brother had their first child, she continued to bake the houses (and gingerbread trees and people!) for our family gingerbread day. When Marlene passed away in 2017, my sister took up the baton and, using Marlene’s recipe, has since prepared the bare houses for our family. Whenever I purchase a tool for my sewing room or change a rotary-cutter blade, I write the date on the item with a permanent marker. This gives me an idea of how often some items need to be replaced and how long I have owned certain pieces of equipment. For my machines, I write in their manuals when they were serviced or repaired. EVER GREENS 1. For an abstract tree, cut five long strips of green fabric tape. (See “How to Make Fabric Tape & Fabric Stickers,” opposite.) Overlap them at the top and fan them out at the bottom. 2. To create a tree using a brown ribbon “trunk,” cut two shades of green fabric tape into strips of various lengths and widths. Arrange them on the brown ribbon from shortest to longest. 3. PLAN FOR CUTTING Our project instructions list pieces in the order they should be cut to make the best use of your fabrics. Always consider the fabric grain before cutting. The arrow on a pattern piece indicates which direction the grain should run. One or more straight edges of a pattern piece should follow the fabric’s lengthwise or crosswise grain. The lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvages (the tightly finished edges), has the least amount of stretch. The crosswise grain, perpendicular to the selvages, has a little more give. The edge of any pattern piece that will be on the outside of a block or quilt should be cut on the lengthwise grain. Do not use the selvage of a woven fabric in a quilt. When washed, it may…
