What do you want to learn? I met designer and shop owner Jen Kingwell of Torquay, Victoria, Australia, several years ago at Fall International Quilt Market in Houston. Fellow designer Sue Spargo introduced us. Sue had encouraged Jen to attend so Jen could introduce her quilt patterns to a wider audience. I knew from the first meeting that she was someone readers of American Patchwork & Quilting® magazine would want to get to know. A few years later, we are now featuring Jen in our pages. To make sure I use the same thread throughout a project, when I begin sewing I write the brand, weight, color, and color number of the thread I’ve selected on the top of the first page of the pattern. As a child, Jen Kingwell would decorate and re-decorate her dollhouse, set up on the bottom shelf of her mother’s bar cart, with fabric scraps. “Mum’s best friend Mavis started my love for fabric. She was a seamstress and there were always beautiful things in her sewing room,” Jen says. “I would go play there and take home her scraps.” As an adult, Jen continued to play with fabric. “When I started my nursing career, people were stitching stuff in the common room,” she says of downtime while working as a midwife. “I brought in a box of fabrics and got started.” All of that playing with fabrics and stitching led Jen and a friend to buy a quilt store in 1998. “She really ran it as I was…

CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved applique pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge. 1. Make a template of the desired pattern out of clear template plastic; do not add seam allowances. (For details, see Make and Use Templates, page 92.) 2. On the right side of the fabric, place your template over various motifs until you find the one you like. Remove the template; place a pin through the desired motif (Photo A). 3. Instagram @dtfiberart My great-grandmother Dorothea Mueller stitched this crazy quilt in the late 1800s. She and her sister got some of the fabrics for it when they made a round trip by train from their home in Northeast Iowa to the West Coast expressly to find new textiles. I admire how she mixed velvets, silks, and satins to create interest. She used a variety of threads and flosses to add dimension to her stitches. Every time I get this quilt out to share with guilds and friends, I get a renewed boost to create and to explore unusual textiles, materials, needlework, and artistic approaches.…
