CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved appliqué pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge. What inspired you to start repurposing? I was taught not to waste and to reuse whenever possible. Combine that with a love of quilts and repurposing seemed like a logical path. I believe old quilts should be repaired whenever possible. But it would almost make me feel sad when I would find quilts that were falling apart and past being rescued. I felt the need to turn what was left of them into something important and useful. I find so much joy in the entire process of rags to riches. What tips would you give others who are trying to be more mindful about upcycling? Before buying new, first search out what can be reused. That might mean buying fabric or crafting supplies at creative reuse centers, yard sales,…
