In Iowa, where I live, there are four distinct seasons, and I think my favorite is autumn. The leaves have changed from myriad shades of green to mustard gold, rusty orange, and crimson red. Pumpkin patches and apple orchards are filled with families enjoying hayrides and farm-fresh produce. The air is crisp and cool. And while I decorate my home with quilts year-round, changing them out for the season, I particularly enjoy displaying fall- and Halloween-inspired throws, wall quilts, and table toppers. 1. Determine what size square you need for your binding length using the process, below. Cut a square of fabric to that size. Multiply your quilt perimeter by binding strip width to find the total inches of bias binding you need. For example: Quilt perimeter: 350" Bias binding strip width: 2½" 350"×2½"=875". Find the square root of the total and round up to the next whole number. The square root of 875" is 29.6"; round up to 30". Add 3" for seaming strips together. 30"+ 3"= 33". The stitch-and-flip technique used to piece units for See the Light is a common sewing practice, though accuracy can be tricky. Here are tips for getting units that turn out the right size every time. DRAW THIN LINES. When marking diagonal lines on squares, use a sharp pencil or fabric pen to mark a thin line. If your line is thick, you might sew at a slightly different angle because you can’t tell which part of the line you want. How accurately you follow that marked line when sewing makes a difference in the finished piece. SEW SCANT ¼" SEAMS. In the attached fabric piece, there’s naturally a bump in the “flip” or fold, which may cause the attached piece to be smaller than intended or not line up…

1. CHECK YOUR STITCHING FIRST Before you begin a project, cut three 2½"-wide strips of fabric. Sew them together with ¼" seams. Press seam allowances away from the center strip. Measure the center strip; it should be 2" wide (Photo 1). If it is wider, your seams are too narrow. If it is narrower, your seams are too wide. A measuring gauge can help you check the width of your seam allowances (Photo 2). CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved appliqué pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge.
