About five years ago, a quilt from designer and author Susan Ache first appeared in American Patchwork & Quilting® magazine, and we have featured several of her projects since. Scrolling through Susan Ache’s Instagram feed is like stepping into a ray of sunshine. Blocks sparkle in carefully selected color combinations and artfully stacked fabrics shine with possibility. Quilts appear at a rate that boggles the imagination. While the almost 40,000 followers of @yardgrl60 appreciate these inspiring peeks into her textile-filled world, sharing projects through social media, magazines, books, and blogs wasn’t a life Susan could have foretold. Ache (pronounced, she says, “like hockey without the H”) didn’t grow up in a do-it-yourself household. CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved applique pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge. Choose cotton shirts of any size, though the larger the size, the more fabric available for your efforts. Launder the shirts if they are new to you. Uses scissors to make small cuts to start each section and to get into smaller areas, then rip where you can. 1. At the bottom front of the shirt, make small cuts next to the buttons and buttonholes; rip to the collar 2. Cut and rip around the collar. Save or discard the collar. Instagram @quiltbev Throughout 2020, when I realized that life-changing events marking significant stages of life were going to be altered by the pandemic, I created a series of quilts that focus on rites of passage. The Beauty of Their Dreams celebrates one such milestone—the completion of kindergarten. This quilt brings me joy because it depicts the bond two girls have formed as classmates and how together they are able to celebrate an educational achievement while looking toward the future. As a mixed-media fiber artist, I find that the most enjoyable part of the quilting process is combining different textures and patterns. I like to use vintage textiles and found objects in my projects. In this quilt, I included fragments from my kindergarten graduation cap to create the girls’ caps.…
