IT’S SUMMER AND TIME TO TRAVEL! I’m looking forward to attending quilting retreats—local, state, and national—which is one of my favorite things to do. I have been going to the Iowa Quilters Guild Officers retreat for more than 25 years. I distinctly remember the first time I attended because I was pregnant with my oldest son. I hadn’t told anyone and slipped out frequently to nap. I feel like I slept through most of that retreat! When I travel by car to quilting retreats, I take four bags, below, two for sewing machines—one is a backup—one for fabric, and one for clothes. Often the suitcase containing fabric is larger than the one containing clothes! We polled our staff members, teachers, and retreat hosts for their favorite tips and suggestions…

CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved appliqué pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge. It was assembled in 2005, before I started designing fabric for Andover Fabrics and while I was building confidence as a quilt designer. I remember I couldn’t find the exact color I wanted for the leaves so I hand-dyed vintage linen tablecloths and cotton pillowcases. I added layers of chenille texture to separate the vertical flower rows. I made the quilt with the help of friends Lesa Dailey, who assisted with freezer-paper preparation, and Becky Cogan, who did the machine appliqué. It is a joy to create with friends!
