EVERY QUILT HAS A STORY. Some we know, some are lost and then found, and some we will never know. In an effort to collect some of those stories, we are introducing a new department called “My Most Cherished Quilt” to American Patchwork & Quilting® magazine. CUT BIAS STRIPS Strips for curved appliqué pieces and binding curved edges should be cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain of a woven fabric), which runs at a 45° angle to the selvage, because it has the most stretch. To cut bias strips, begin with a fabric square or rectangle; if necessary, square up the left edge with an acrylic ruler. Make a cut at a 45° angle to the left edge (Bias Strip Diagram). Handle the diagonal edges carefully to avoid distorting the bias. To cut a strip, measure the desired width from the 45° cut edge; cut parallel to the edge. 1 FIND A CONTAINER Store each WIP in its own container. This makes it simple to organize multiple projects and select one when you’re ready to work on it. The type of container is up to you and your space. Some of our favorite storage options are below. 2 STORE YOUR WIP When you’re organizing a project in your chosen container, include all fabrics, sewn units, the pattern, special templates and rulers, and any specialty threads for piecing or quilting. If you bought backing or binding fabric specifically for this project, include it in the container instead of putting it in your stash so you don’t accidentally use it. 3 LABEL THE PROJECTS Add a label to each container so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. This matters because there’s no way to predict exactly where backing seam lines will fall in relation to the quilt top seams and because most quilt top seams are pressed in one direction. Happily for me, my mom and Grandma Lulu are prolific quiltmakers. In 2017, they made me this quilt using the Lulu Lane collection I designed for Moda Fabrics and named after my grandmother.
