For years, I was a skin-care minimalist. Through college and beyond, my routine was largely informed by my mother’s longtime habits: sweep off makeup with a tissue coated in Pond’s cold cream; moisturize with Olay Complete. I dabbled in the occasional mud mask and scrub, but I didn’t truly get into skin care until moving to New York City in my late 20s.
