WHAT EXACTLY IS keto?
In a nutshell, keto is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb eating plan. The goal is ketosis, a state in which your body burns fat—not carbs—as its primary fuel. It makes your body incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy, and it turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain. It also lowers blood sugar.
On a ketogenic diet*, 75 to 90 percent of your daily calories should come from fat, 5 to 20 percent from protein, and 2 to 5 percent from carbohydrate. Which foods qualify as keto? The list varies depending on the expert (or dieter) you’re talking to. But generally, these are keto-friendly:
FATTY FISH
salmon, trout, tuna, and mackerel
NONSTARCHY VEGETABLES
tomatoes, onions, and peppers
MEAT AND EGGS…
