Boeing’s Starliner capsule might have been able to finish its mission as planned if time had been on its side. Starliner launched on 5 June on its first-ever crewed flight, a trial run that sent NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore to the International Space Station (ISS). The duo were supposed to live on the orbiting laboratory for just a week or so, but NASA extended their stay to about three months while studying thruster issues that cropped up during Starliner’s rendezvous with the ISS. Ultimately, the agency concluded that bringing Williams and Wilmore home on Starliner was just too risky, so the capsule returned to Earth uncrewed on 6 September. Japanese space-sustainability company Astroscale just inked a deal to take a bus-sized rocket stage out of orbit by the end of the decade. The pioneering project, funded by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is a continuation of Astroscale’s ADRAS-J mission, which recently completed an up-close orbital inspection of a 12-year-old upper stage of a Japanese H-IIA rocket. The new mission, called ADRAS-J2, will grab the rocket stage using a robotic arm and pull it into Earth’s atmosphere to burn up, demonstrating a critical space cleanup technology. Microgravity is a condition which makes people or objects appear weightless. Astronauts experience weightlessness not because gravity goes away, but because they roll with it. The International Space Station [ISS] is not far away: it’s 250 miles [400 kilometres] up. At that altitude, the pull of Earth’s gravity is still 88 per cent as strong. With nearly as much gravity as us, the ISS is constantly falling. It would hit the ground in about five minutes. But the station is zooming sideways at five miles [eight kilometres] per second. By the time it would have crashed, the station zoomed over the horizon, and the curvature of Earth moved down the goal posts. A search of more than 1,300 galaxies for extraterrestrial signals has helped constrain expectations as to how many communicating technological civilisations may exist beyond Earth. Conducted with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in Australia, the search concerned itself with low radio frequencies in the 80 to 300 megahertz (MHz) range. For comparison, SETI, which stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, typically looks for alien signals in the 1,420 MHz hydrogen emission frequency. In fact, low frequencies are relatively unexplored for SETI. The search was conducted by Chenoa Tremblay of the SETI Institute in California and Steven Tingay, the director of the MWA from Australia’s Curtin University. The Andromeda Galaxy – the Milky Way’s closest galactic neighbour – is located about 2.5 million light years away. Measuring approximately 152,000 light years across, it has nearly the same mass as our Milky Way. A recent Hubble image, released on 30 August, captures a detailed view of the northeast region of the famed galaxy, including its intricately woven spiral arms and swathes of ionised gas that fuel star formation. “The combination of stellar nurseries and supernovae creates a dynamic environment that excites the surrounding hydrogen gas, flourishing it into a garden of star-studded roses,” NASA officials said.…

The discovery of iron winds on WASP-76 b demonstrates just how truly ‘alien’ some planets beyond our Solar System are. Located around 634 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Pisces, the strange and hostile extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, has temperatures of around 2,400 degrees Celsius (4,350 degrees Fahrenheit) – hot enough to vaporise iron and cause iron rains to pummel the planet’s surface. These intimidating temperatures arise from WASP-76 b’s proximity to its star, which classifies it as a hot Jupiter planet. This proximity also causes the planet to be tidally locked to its star, meaning one side always faces its host, blasting it with radiation in perpetuity. A long-lost moon could explain why Mars is so different from the other rocky planets in the Solar System. Today Mars has two tiny moons. But early in its history, the Red Planet may have had a much larger moon, which might be responsible for Mars’ weird shape and extreme terrain, Michael Efroimsky, an astronomer at the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC, proposes in a paper that has been submitted to the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets and is available as a preprint via arXiv. Artificial intelligence is all the rage these days. When we think of AI, we’re usually thinking of uncanny deep-fake images and ChatGPT’s written responses – but astronomers are using it to make significant discoveries, too. Researchers from the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) in New York City recently used AI to determine five cosmological parameters – the numbers that describe the entire universe in computer simulations – with unprecedented precision. These parameters can be thought of as the “settings of the universe that determine how it operates on the largest scales,” said astronomer Liam Parker, a co-author on the new work. Scientists have observed something unexpected in Venus’ atmosphere – an increase in the level of deuterium relative to hydrogen. The consequences of this discovery could upend our current understanding of the amber world. As it turns out, it would affect our assumption that Venus is a perpetually barren, inhospitable planet. “Venus is often called Earth’s twin due to its similar size,” said Hiroki Karyu, a researcher at Tohoku University and one of the new study’s scientists. “Despite the similarities between the two planets, it has evolved differently. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy located in the Supergalactic Plane, and while we already know it’s special because it contains Earth, it’s remarkable in other ways, too. Look across our cosmic backyard, for instance, and you’ll find the Milky Way is something of a rarity. In the Supergalatic Plane, measuring about a billion light years across, there’s a super-high concentration of galaxies, but the vast majority of them are elliptical. Spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are far less common, and astronomers have long wanted to know why. “Among the brightest galaxies, there are around twice as many ellipticals as spirals close to the Supergalactic Plane – it is not an enormous excess, but it is statistically significant,” explains Dr Till Sawala, a postdoctoral researcher at Durham University…

Debris from the impact of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) with the asteroid Dimorphos could reach Earth and Mars, astronomers have concluded. However, while the debris could result in meteors on Mars, it’s rather unlikely we’ll see a meteor shower on Earth. DART slammed into Dimorphos on 26 September 2022 with the intention of testing whether a kinetic impact could nudge the orbit of a potentially hazardous asteroid away from Earth one day. The test passed with flying colours: Dimorphos was pushed into a shorter orbit around its parent asteroid, Didymos. The impact, which gouged out a crater in Dimorphos, also ejected a large amount of debris. Conversation is impractical unless we’re very close. To understand why, imagine that the Milky Way is stuffed with a million alien societies. The nearest to us will be about 100 light years away. If we detect a signal from these cosmic neighbours and grab a microphone to ask a penetrating question, it will take at least 200 years before we can expect an answer, so don’t count on conversation. A planet is in conjunction with the Sun when it and Earth are aligned on opposite sides of the Sun. Declination (Dec) How high an object will rise in the sky. Cosmic dust may have helped kick-start life on Earth. New findings challenge a widely held assumption that this wasn’t a plausible explanation. The origin of life on Earth has long remained a mystery. Many theories suggest that life emerged from prebiotic chemistry, in which organic compounds formed and repeatedly self-organised until life as we know it developed. However, scientists have noted that the rocks that make up Earth’s surface are relatively deficient in reactive and soluble forms of the essential elements needed for this prebiotic process, such as phosphorus, sulphur, nitrogen and carbon. A NASA cubesat designed to search for the universe’s most powerful and violent explosions has successfully detected its first massive burst, space agency officials announced. BurstCube, a shoebox-sized satellite placed into orbit in April to detect and study gamma-ray bursts, or GRBs, spotted a ‘mega blast’ in the small, dim constellation of Microscopium in the southern sky. The Kankoh-maru, named after the steam-powered Japanese Kankō Maru warship, is ambitious in its design to say the least. If it reaches fruition, this bizarre egg-shaped vehicle will take off and land by vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) as a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) spacecraft. The whole thing is reusable, and with each launch the Kankoh-maru can take 50 people into orbit. The vehicle was first proposed by the Japanese Rocket Society in 1993. Since then a variety of tests on VTVL vehicles, albeit ones much smaller than the Kankoh-maru, have been carried out to test the feasibility of such a design. The good news? More than four months after launching to space, a solar-sailing spacecraft has successfully spread its wings above our planet. NASA’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) caught a ride to space on 24 April on Rocket Lab’s Electron vehicle, and at the end of August, NASA shared in a release that its mission operators verified the technology reached full deployment in space. White dwarfs are stars that have reached the ends of their lives. They have masses similar to our Sun, but that mass is contained in an area about the size of Earth. These stars no longer have fusion going on in their cores. They cool over time, so the environment on an orbiting planet would go from warm to cold in general. The ‘habitable zone’ would be at a distance of 0.005 to 0.02 astronomical units – this is 200 to 20 times closer to the star than Mercury is to our Sun.
