Few things have changed more profoundly than the way we work. A century ago, most jobs involved physical labour—and lots of it. From the farm to the factory, the wharf to the home, work was hard and hours were long. The ‘labouring classes’ were just that, and they comprised the bulk of all workers.
Today, very few jobs depend on muscle power. Instead we have machines to help with most tasks. Of all the drivers of workplace change, technology is one of the most profound. Along with technology came other transformations, such as the gendered nature of the workforce. For both men and women, the modern workplace is now a very different world.
