ALL IS NOT well at advertising agencies, especially those owned by major holding companies. Amid ongoing mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring—business activity that almost always entails layoffs—60% of employees at holdco-owned agencies feel that morale around the office is negative, according to a recent ADWEEK reader survey. Only 32% of respondents at holding company agencies describe the mood at work as positive. Additional findings suggest around half of people employed at the likes of WPP, IPG, Omnicom, and Publicis feel insecure about their job. AFTER A LONG week as CEO of marketing transformation agency Razorfish, Josh Campo takes getting away from it all literally. FIVE YEARS AGO, the French ad giant Publicis Groupe was crashing. It had spent $3.7 billion on consulting firm Sapient in 2014, and $3.9 billion on data company Epsilon in 2019, as it set its sights on transforming into a digital and data-driven marketing powerhouse. Over the next decade, Publicis spent roughly $12 billion to make that vision a reality. But by the height of the pandemic, all it had to show for these investments was $5 billion of debt against a $4 billion market cap. CANNES LIONS HAS introduced three dedicated Safe Zones, which will be staffed by trained professionals 22 hours a day, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., during the festival, according to DEI chief Frank Starling. From June 16-20, the confidential spaces will operate inside the main venue at Palais des Festivals, Pantiero Terrace (close to the Cannes Lions registration space), and at La Roseraie park at the opposite side of the Croisette. They will be open to anyone who “feels uncomfortable, in need of support,” or wants advice from safeguarding professionals.
